TRUST

301--3rd period

Today we're bringing in the role of trust in the S/M/R paradigm. Why is it important/ How does one gain or lose it? And what happens when it's broken? Discuss.

*** *** *** *** *** *** ***

401--5th period

Last term we did trust and confronted personal space issues and secrets. Now we're moving on to marketing and public relations...how does a business engender trust? To what end? How do trust and layalty go hand in hand? Discuss.

Shep comes in and hands in his pass from last week, asking if there's any work he needs to make up.

During discussion he pipes up with, "Trust is lost when the sender assures the receiver that certain conditions will be met and they aren't. When they say they can/will do something and they don't deliver. It can also be lost when there is an understood message that they will/won't do something. Like sleep with your S.O. or something. They may not have said in so many words, "I'll never sleep with Suzie or Billy," or whoever, but when your friend knows who you're seeing it's kind of expected that they'll respect what that means. You lose your trust in them if they do something they shouldn't have under those circumstances."

"When it's broken, the person has to work far harder to earn it back - if they can - than they did to have to earn it in the first place. Most people are conditioned to trust people until given a good reason not to. But, once trust has been broken, it can never be repaired to like-new condition."

"It can also depend on the sender if they haven't been clear before and are afraid of being misunderstood. So trust can be broken by the sender itself, by itself. That sort of thing depends on the sender to correct themselves," Togusa said. "Breakdown of trust can also be from opposing veiwpoints that have not been brought to resolution."

Boone nodded his agreement with what the others said, then looked to CJ.

"Didn't that one guy say "Trust only actions, because most of life happens at the level of events, not of words'? I know it doesn't have too much to do with the discussion, but..."

"Trust is an illusion." Maia said leaning back in her seat "Eventually every one you trust will ruin it somehow or another. The lesson is don't bother trust them."

"Seems like kind of a negative outlook..."

Maia hooked her feet up on the chair in front of her. "Yeah." She said in a soft voice. "It is." She looked at him and smiled sadly "But risk nothing lose nothing."

"But," he began, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

Jack shows up for class.

Late.

As usual. With coffee. And chocolate.

"I'm here!"

"You need to be able to trust a business that you're going to utilize. You don't want to pay for services if you don't trust that they're going to complete the job, or do it shoddily."

Allie nods in agreement.

"And if a business proves that it's not worthy of your trust, people have no problem spreading that around and encouraging their friends and family to boycott the business."

"Good business practices, good PR. If you hear that a company treats their workers horribly, you might not want to buy from them because the image they're trying to get the public to buy into isn't their real image. And if you know they're lying about how they treat their workers, they might be lying about other things."
