wrongkindofsith: (Your mouth moves and nonsense comes out)

Today there was a projector screen set up. In the middle of an empty pool, so there was probably a story there.

"Apparently it takes training and dedication to become an Olympic athlete," Cara said in the tone of someone reading off a memorised speech. "And the best way to understand that is through the medium of film."

That and the Danger Shop was glitching.

"We'll get back to the events next week," Jane promised. "And while this is a winter Olympics sport, it still counts."

"They're divided into seasons?" Your teachers, everyone.

"So, like, obviously you have to talk to people that you wanna be romantic with." Yet another clear reason that sex was so much better, you could skip talking entirely, but Navaan had pretty much given up on this class understanding the obvious - which was why she was saying it now. "And at least some of that talk has to be flirting. How else is the person you're talking to gonna know you wanna...umm. Date them? Or whatever?" Not the verb she'd been thinking of, but again, this class. "If you talk to them the say way to talk to your teacher or a waiter or a coworker or whatever, how are they supposed to know that you want - err, like - them in a different way than you do those people?" Even Navaan varied up how she talked to people. There were the 'people I'm probably not gonna flang for some reason' and 'everybody else.'

Wait...is this...good information? )

And now she was bored of the topic. "Yeah, that's all I've got to say about that. Again, just going for sex is way less complicated and has a better pay-off in the end. I know I keep saying that, but I keep hoping it will sink in for some of you and you forget this whole 'looking for romance' thing and take the more fun option."

Gladio had spent the previous day enjoying soaking in a Cup NoodleTM hot tub, and so it probably went without saying that he seemed to be a in a pretty good mood today. Did that mean he was going to go easy on the class? Well, he sort of thought he was already pretty easy on them, so, no, not really!

He did briefly consider bringing Cup NoodleTM into the lesson somehow, but....nah. He'd just save it for a treat for himself after a successful lesson, because there were important things to go over today.

"So," he began, "last week, we did a little partner work, and today, we're going to focus on solo techniques to help improve your overall swordwork. For the rest of the class, these are going to be drills we'll be starting every lesson with, so pay attention, learn them well, we're going to spend most of the time today honing and perfecting them as well as we can in the span of time we have, so take some time to stretch out and get ready if you haven't already while I go over them. We'll also set aside a little bit of time at the end to partner up again and see what you remember from last week. Maybe not the most exciting thing in the world, but it's training, it's all about repetition and consistency and building up both muscle and muscle memory. Alright, so...."

And from there, he plucked up his own massive sword, giving it a twirl to settle it into position, and started going through explaining the drills.

Had Rosa yet come around to accepting that this class was already bullshit so she might as well just sit back, enjoy the popcorn Tightpants was bringing, and just wing it all?

Mostly, yeah. That was her intention from the start, but, well, then she'd go and get all passionate about these brilliant movies no matter how hard she tried, so it was sort of an ever-perpetuating cycle. And she couldn't even be that mad about it, either, because...Nancy Meyers.

What a horrible existential crisis she'd created for herself.

But at least she could escape it for the duration of some of the most brilliant filmmaking in all of movie history and generally ignore the conceit of teaching around it all together still.

"Right," she said. "This week's movie features another very nice house with an incredibly spacious kitchen with a good amount of counter space, natural light, and artful clutter. I particularly like the double French doors that lead into the dining area. But don't take my word for it. We'll watch the movie and you'll see for yourself."

Mostly, she just wanted to get to the movie, but also she did kind of want to talk about those doors a little more, shut up.

"Meep meep meep meep meep meep," Beaker, covered in blue and red paint splotches, hissed from where he was standing in front of the Portalocity office. "Meep meep meep mee."

Quick! Inside before Sam showed up! Beaker had told him to go to the park instead and that was only going to buy him so much time.

"Mee meep meep!" he announced grandly, holding up a picture with the Olympic rings. "Meep!"

That's right, gang, you're going to see the Opening Ceremonies in Paris! Culture!

And if you had the feeling Beaker would be somehow launched into the torch as it was lit, well. Good instincts.

They were back in the House of Ill Repute today, because Aphra was not going to go outside in this weather. They did, however have a number of neon coloured cocktails to match the weather and anyone unfortunate enough to get caught outside in it.

"So if we're going to talk philosophy, the rancor in the room if you come from my galaxy is the Jedi," she began once everyone had a drink in hand. "This island has an incredibly high density of Jedi, but if you've somehow managed to miss them, they're basically magical space monks, with awesome laser swords."

"And epic romances of deeply restrained passion and longing." No, Isabela, that was your friend fiction about them.

"Now, there's a lot of different schools of thought on the Jedi, especially from outsiders. Entire academic careers have been made arguing over over points of grammar, let alone their actual philosophy." At least until it had become very, very illegal to hold any sort of opinions on them. "But to boil it down, they were a bunch of people who claimed to have a mystical connection to the forces that shaped the galaxy, and decided they were going to try to become their bests selves, and help out people who needed it. And it got them slaughtered by fascists." Including Aphra's former boss. "Including by one of my former bosses.

"So I guess today's question is, is it possible to actually become your best self, when not only do you have to contend with yourself, but people are going to drag you back down into the muck if you try."

Isabela immediately started pouring more drinks. They were going to need them.
