sword_chocobro: ((older) glancing over)

"Welcome back, everyone," said Gladio, grinning at the class at the meeting spot at the edge of the preserve, where camping packs waited for them still, as well as the ubiquitous red ColemanTM cooler and several bundles of firewood. "Last week, we talked tents, and the importance of shelter when camping, and today, we're going to be focusing on one of the next most important thing for a campsite: the fire. We're going to be discussing how to build one and important campfire safety, before enjoying the fruits of our labor with some classic campfire snacks.

"But first?" He flashed that all-too-pleased with himself grin again. "We gotta get there. Grab your packs, and grab some firewood, and we'll head in. Now, you don't have to grab the firewood if you don't want to, but that just means when we get to the site, you'll be foraging for your tinder instead. So you got options. Let's get going."

"So okay, some of you nominally know how not to die," Atton said. They were by the flight sims again, and if you peeked over his shoulder, you could get a glance of a dark city skyline.

What? He missed Nar Shaddaa, the way you missed a loose tooth or a bunion that'd always been there or something.

"Now you're going to try doing that again, but with company." He held up a button-- after a second, it projected a holographic image of a small starship above it. "This is the T-16 skyhopper," he said cheerfully. "Yours is going to be full of passengers. They're going to yell at you and try to back-seat drive. Instructions on how to actually use the controls are in the cockpit."

Beat.

"Get them to where they want to be in one piece."

"Hey, everyone," Summer greeted from the front of the classroom with that usual beatific grin that brightened her face whenever she was put into a position of clear power over people's palate and taste buds. "Glad to see we didn't scare you off too badly last week, and to reward you for your perseverance, we're going to be looking into something that might be a little less obviously food crime, and putting it up for debate, focused around one main question: is it a food crime to claim to be one thing while very obviously not being that thing?"

“Like how cheesecake isn’t a cake?” Stark, full of foolish hope, asked.

"No," said Summer, unapologetic. Well, maybe a little bit, because it did feel like this was going to be particularly insulting since they involved pie, two of which were revealed dramatically with the lift of a couple of cloches. "More like when an apple pie is not really an apple pie, or maybe when a pecan pie is not really a pecan pie?"

“Not like when Boston Cream Pie isn’t a pie?” Poor Stark. He was trying! He sighed. “I didn’t really think so.”

"More like when when a pie is still a pie," Summer reiterated helpfully, "but uses stuff like Ritz crackers and pinto beans! Let's get started!"

“There shouldn’t be beans in pie,” Stark told her. “The crackers weren’t terrible the last time, at least.”

"Look on the bright side," Summer offered. "At least they're not green beans."

Ooh, she should make a green bean pie.

“Please don’t make a green bean pie,” Stark said quickly, giving his fellow teacher a pleading look. He couldn’t read narrative but he knew Summer fairly well.

"Right." Jon sighed. "I hope that gossiping about dead people counts for this...thing. Apparently today is the anniversary of Marilyn Monroe singing "Happy Birthday" to the American president and further fueling rumors they were having an affair. One of many of his, apparently."

He grimaced. "Or if you choose, feel free to gossip about the woman who wore that same dress to the Met Gala last year and damaged it."

How was he supposed to grade gossip, anyway?

When Jo turned up to the library for her shift, the first thing that she noticed that the shelves seemed emptier than normal and that a whole genre of books had seemed to disappear from the shelves. She had suspected something had to be due to happen soon and it had been a while before the books had decided to disappear on her.

After close inspection it seemed to be contained to the historical fiction section that the books had disappeared from and that seemed to be the books that needed to be reshelved so Jo wasn’t quite sure what to do about the books that needed to be put back since they currently didn’t have shelf space to go back to.
