"Alright, you guys," Amaya greeted the students with a nod and a faint smile, a look that said she was ready, as always to get to work. "Last week, we dabbled in a bit of pottery, and I'd say it went fairly well, and I've got a few things lined up for the rest of the semester, but today we're going to focus on a classic project for this class we haven't touched on yet, and that's the good old puzzle box! That means we're back on wood and a lot of defined parts and pieces, so that means using the scroll saw, which both of you seemed to have had a pretty good grasp of. Still, if for whatever reason today's not your day for working with the saw, I've got some precut pieces, as well. But let's get right to it.

"Again, I've got the instructions written out to follow along with, but if there's any questions, I'll be right here. Let's get to work!"

Jon looked noticeably tired today, though he was still as put-together as possible, with the exception of his hair, which he kept forgetting and running his hands through. He took a deep breath and forced himself upright, nodding to the students as they filed in and sat.

On the board was written: The Lonely: fear of isolation, being disconnected or abandoned.

"Right. So. I trust you all read today's assignment. Or possibly watched the Twilight Zone episode based on it. The story posits that loneliness can wear on even the most antisocial person and cause them to better themselves. Do you think it adequately gets across that fear of loneliness? Do you think it's right? How do you think the protagonist will get through his second year?"

As usual, before they left he wrote the next week's assignment on the board: All Quiet on the Western Front.

"Sometimes there are words that express an emotion so perfectly that you're kind of angry your language didn't come up with it, too," Anakin said. "Today we're going to talk about one of those words: schadenfreude. It's a German word that means taking pleasure in the misfortune of others and I know we've all experienced it."

He smirked slightly. "It comes up frequently around here during gremlin bites, since gremlins are basically schadenfreude given form."

He leaned back against his desk. "So, from an ethical standpoint, why do you think our initial reaction to other people having bad luck is to laugh about it? Does it matter if you already dislike the person? Is this related to why watching people get hit in the privates is always hilarious?"
