The first day back at work after vacation was always a drag. When you had to spend the first several minutes of your shift cleaning up spilled fake blood because you forgot to check to make sure, you know, that the coffee you got to make that first-day-back drag easier was actual coffee and spit it all over the circulation desk. . . .

Tip was in a Mood is what I'm saying. The fact that the books were all giving her baleful side eye for the mess wasn't helping things at all.

"I hope none of you get stage fright," Vanessa said, "because this week you're going to have to sing for your supper!"

She also hoped at least one of you could carry a tune in a bucket, but that might be asking too much of the universe.

"Well, not literally, because they won't let us starve you any more than they'll let us kick you off the island."

"We could give it the ol' college try, though," Wade suggested. You know. Helpfully. "But today is a singing contest. Who will win? Who will lose? Who will be a joke for years to come, but still somehow make that green?"

"Who will try to sing a Christina Aguilera song but not have the range?" Vanessa wondered.

"Tough luck, that's the music you've all been assigned." The teachers were just cruel.

"That's right, it's Christina Aguilera week here on American Idol! Fandom Idol? Whatever. You have to get on stage and sing for a live studio audience! And Simon Cowell." Okay, they were all holograms, but details. "And remember, you can't just stand there and sing. Points will be awarded for performance quality."

"Ooo, can we program those chairs from The Voice too?" Wade asked. Because that would make this so much more fun. For the teachers mostly.

Vanessa started fiddling with the remote for the Danger Shop. "Let's find out!" Not to add anything to the class. Just so they could spin around.

"Have you come back from vacation yet? Because I haven't," said Lucifer.

You could tell. He was taking advantage of the Danger Shop in order to render his very own beach, and he was, in fact, laying draped in a hammock at the front of the class on said beach, sunglasses on. A parasol stood beside him, and he was holding a book he had no intention of reading.

"Now I heard there was something about Russian cybercriminals pretending to be Iranian cybercriminals and being all... cyber... criminally," he said, waving lazily. "Go do research, come back, and tell me what on Earth happened, will you? Or some other... cyber... criminal... thing. Make me a nice Insta, if you can. Lucifer needs his after-vacation nap."

He tipped his sunhat over his eyes and settled into his hammock.

Well. Have... fun with those computer terminals sitting on small bamboo tables on the beach.

The class was in the Danger Shop today, with several stations set up with identical computers for each student.

"Before break, I had you design and build your own computers," Kitty began, with a very large, glorious, non-blood cursed coffee in hand, "and today we're going to break them. I've gone ahead and created a problem on every one of these computers. They're all different, so what your neighbor does won't work for you. Your job is to figure out what the problem is and fix it, or at least do the best you can during class. If you need help or a hint, you can just ask."

She was in a better mood about that with caffeine.
