"Hello, children!"

How did Lucifer manage to pair that bright grin with a look that read please stay at the agreed-upon distance? "Welcome to our crime scene."

... They were in the Danger Shop, yes, made up to look like the intersection in front of Lucifer's new house. There was a body on the ground, on the steps of the Post Office, and the wreckage of a rickshaw just a few feet away, in front of Fast Eddie's.

"Today is the first of our classes on observation. Observe the crime scene."

A long pause.

"... Well, go on, observe the crime scene. Do I have to do everything around here?"

You could, presumably, at least try to give them some kind of sense what they should be looking for, Lucifer.

He did not.

This week the danger shop was done up to look like a tropical island, devoid of civilization. Save for the pre-programmed camera crews. But that just melted right on into the background, right?

"This week on... Survivor," Wade said in a deeper, radio announcer voice. "You'll be voting one of your classmates out of the class permanently."

One of the pre-programmed camera crew handed Vanessa a note. She read it and said, sotto voce to Wade, "Apparently we're still not allowed to do that."

"*BEEP*," Wade said, getting bleeped out in real time by the editing team. "Oh, c'mon. You get one *BEEP* in a PG-13 movie."

"We can't say *BEEP* now either?" Vanessa complained. "What kind of *BEEP*ing program is this? Uuuuugh. Okay, fine. Today you'll be voting one of your classmates off the island until the end of the class, I guess." Boring.

"This show *BEEP*ing sucks *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEEEEEP*," Wade said, making a series of complicated and vaguely offensive hand gestures to illustrate whatever point he was trying to make. It wasn't working too well.

Vanessa was handed another note. "Apparently we've used up most of the production budget for this week on beeping out the *BEEP*s. We have a *BEEP*ing production budget? Nobody told me about a *BEEP*ing budget! Okay, we have to issue you a challenge, I guess." They might have forgotten to plan this part.

"...*BEEP* me," Wade sighed, tossing his hands up. "I knew we shouldn't have programmed the movie magic side into this."

It really was a poor choice on their part.

"Okay, the challenge is to find food here so you don't slowly starve for our entertainment while the production team just watches dispassionately."

"And then vote who you're kicking off the island!" Vanessa said, and, after a moment of thought, added that, "It can't be us."

"Huh," Tip said, flipping through a book that had flung itself bodily onto her feet the moment she'd walked in. "Bill, did you know that some scientists believe elephant skulls are responsible for ancient beliefs in the cyclops? They thought the hole for the trunk was one giant eye socket."

Bill buzzed through the air above her head, spouting bubbles.

"How long have you been on Earth now, and you don't know what an elephant is." Tip shook her head. "Right, let's get you an 'animals of the world' book to look through."

"Welcome back," Ghanima said as the students entered the Danger Shop.  She was standing beside two large trunks, and the room was blank, not yet assigned an environment.  "Today, we're going a bit farther north than many of you, myself included, are accustomed to."

There are strange things done in the midnight sun / by the men who moil for gold; / The Arctic trails have their secret tales / That would make your blood run cold )

"Now get to work," she said, opening the second chest to distribute tools to the class before taking a knife for herself.  She wasn't going to ask the students to do something that she was unwilling to attempt herself.  "Feel free to work solo or in groups.  I programmed the room so that we've got one hour to dark, and you don't want to be caught out without a place to sleep."

Today the Danger Shop looked like a cool, hip gaming lounge. For reasons.

"So we have some very different perspectives in this class," Kitty began, and no seriously, for a small class, there was a lot of ground to cover, "and I've decided to bring us all to the middle a little bit. Today, you're going to be learning a little about games. There are different styles and platforms, but today we're talking specifically about PC games, which you can play on your personal computer. These really became popular back in the 80's, when the graphics weren't great and there probably wasn't too much you could do, but there were some gems.

"Which is why you're going to play Oregon Trail today. Based on the real life journey of pioneers headed out west to make a better life for themselves, which was extremely not easy, it's now basically known for one specific pop culture reference," Kitty said. "But for those of you who don't have experience with these at all, it's somewhere to start, and if you've got a ton of experience, it's just kind of fun. So get to your computers, set up your parties, and try not to die of dysentery."
