died8yearsago: (cool with coffee)

It felt like ages since Rosa had taught this class, which was weird, because the last time Rosa had taught this class, she didn't want anything to do with it, and now there was a part of her that was actually looking forward to it, and it was super weird and kind of gross and she didn't really like it, but also, like, her classes were totally bad ass, enough that it was almost cool?

Whatever. Either way, it made her feel too many things, and that was just lame, so she was definitely phoning it in today to avoid accepting or dealing with any of them.

So she came in late, chugging the last of her coffee, tossed the empty cup into the wastebin by the desk, and sighed, giving the class a lookover. "Okay," she said. "Bad Ass Bitch Survival Guide. The way I see it, you're probably in the class for one of three reasons: you thought it sounded cool, you're being forced to take it, or you know who I am and know I'm awesome. Either way, there are worse ways to spend your Friday morning. There are also a lot of better ways, too, and the first week is always the worst, so we're going to make this pretty qucik so we can all just get out of here. The first week is usually about introductions, so your teachers can get to know you and your classmates, but, honestly, I don't really care. I probably won't even remember. So we're not going to bother. We are going to bother, though, with being someone we aren't today."

Rosa turned to the board and wrote "SONIA RAMIREZ" in big letters.

"That," she said, turning to the students, "is the most recently added secret identity, and I don't mind using that here because I actually got it from one of those weekends where you wake up as someone else, so some people here have even met her. That's a thing, by the way, for all the new faces I'm seeing, weekends where you wake up as someone else. They're super fun, and, if you're lucky, won't screw you over when you turn back to normal. But Sonia here likes to use her meek and mild disposition to grift people, and she's the reason I've got to be careful if I'm ever out near Reno again. She's got papers, legal documents, which means I can go anywhere in the world as Sonia Ramirez and do practically anything without it coming back later and even touching Rosa Diaz. She's got a background, she's got goals, she's got real estate in Cancun. Having a solid alternate identity," or three...or a dozen.... "can come in handy, it's been crucial to my surival in a few instances, as well as the survival of others. And not just for throwing off creeps at picnics.

"So, here's the thing. Each of you has about five minutes. Gimme a good secret identity. Convince me you're someone you're not. If it's believable enough, you can go. Any questions? I mean, it's not that hard, and now you're just wasting time. So if you're ready, let's hear it, and let's get out of here. Literally none of us want to be here right now, especially me."

Rosa pulled out the chair of the desk, sat down, and kicked up her feet, arms folding, occasionally checking her watch and looking bored, like this was the longest five minutes of her life, although she knew these were always pretty great.

Oh, what a difference a year could make.

A whole. Goddamn. Year.

"So, we might be starting in the deep end today," Tony said once the class had arrived. "With, well, not yelling, but basically yelling about the US Senate."

There would be so much righteous anger, class.

"Right," Steve said, pulling down a hand-drawn little triangle of buildings--the US Capitol, the White House, and a series of scales because he was pretty sure most people couldn't recognize the Supreme Court at a glance. "Theoretically, the US government is held in balance by a series of checks and balances. The President can't get too power-hungry or overtly crazy without the other two branches of government 'checking' him into the nearest facility for the criminally negligent."

Steve thought this was actually helping. "One of those branches in the US Congress, which is broken up into two sections: the US House, run by the Speaker of the House, and the US Senate, which is supposed to be more of a group of equals with two people as leaders to make it slightly more streamlined. But not right now." He gestured to Tony. "Mr. Stark?"

"Oh no, now we have--" Tony taped a picture of a turtle over the US Capitol building like it was some sort of slow kaiju. "--the Senate majority leader refusing to allow any new legislation to pass through the Senate to be voted on. Just flat out refusing. Because that's how responsible adults behave."

The sarcasm was strong in this one.

"I'm so disappointed in him," Steve said, looking the kind of disappointed that made people want to curl up under desks and confess to every childhood misdeed.

"And instead of the introductions we're sure you've done this entire week so far, we'll be asking you just how you would handle this completely ridiculous situation," Tony said. "With The Turtle."

"And because around here, it's important to specify, it's not a literal turtle running the Senate," Steve added. "He just kind of looks like a turtle. So. How do you make a grown man do his job?"

Seeing as how it was Trevor's first day working in the library, he was taking his time to settle in. Maybe feeling the slightest bit of nostalgia for the old family library if he settled in one place for too long.

Which was why he was aggressively shelving the books that had been left behind by whoever had worked before him.

And then pausing to squint at the occasional rustle of paper or creak of book spines when he knew he was alone in there.

Class would be meeting in the Danger Shop, but today it just looked like a well-appointed office, with plenty of chairs for everybody.

"Hello, and welcome to Cooking Through History," he told the class. "We will be learning many things about how humans have approached food and cooking throughout the years. There will be field trips involved, and you will also be cooking yourself. This week, however, is for introductions, so I would like to hear from each of you your name, your experience with any kinds of cooking, and also any allergies, aversions, or dietary restrictions you have."

He uncovered several large dishes on his desk.

"Today we will be eating my food. Testaroli, arguably the oldest known pasta, with olive oil and cheese, and peas, perhaps the oldest cultivated vegetable. Also beer, homemade, which is the oldest beverage for which we have recipes. And water for those of you who may choose not to drink it."

He brought out plates and silverware and waved them toward it. "Get your lunch, and introduce yourselves."
