Jenkins had managed to keep the same classroom this semester as the last one, which was to say a standard classroom, rearranged into warmly lit room cluttered with aging electronics and ephemera, with a single long table featuring enough seats for every student, and a rolling blackboard.

Look, you spend a good few hundred years at least hanging out in one type of room and see if it doesn't end up what you're most comfortable with.

Even if Verity hadn't been addicted to coffee on the regular, there was no way she would have been able to have her first class without an over-large cup of it this morning. Her evening before had been spent going over her notes, questioning her capability to teach such a course, and then remembering the class she'd heard about last semester, which had gotten her to dive back into the material again.

Rival-teaching: great for the pedagogy, terrible for the sleep cycle.

"Hi," she said, when all the students had filed in. "So, this is ( The Cryptozoologist's Field Guide )

"But, that's all stuff we'll get into next week. I'm told that this week is for introductions. So name, why you took this course if you have an interesting reason, any experience with cryptids or magical creatures from your world if you have any, and if you don't have anything that suits...I dunno, ask me a question about cryptids or cryptozoology. Let's see what you're interested in and how fast think on your feet."

Practical Diplomacy, [Wednesday, January 3, 2017]

Anakin came sweeping into the class, Jedi robes swirling behind him, three minutes after class was due to start. "Well, we're halfway through the week, so I'm assuming many of you are already very tired of introductions," he said, "and that's too bad because doing repetitive things you're secretly sick of is about 80 percent of diplomacy."

He gave the class a rueful smile. "I'm Master Anakin Skywalker, and I'm a Jedi: in my home galaxy, that means I'm something like a priest-diplomat with superpowers. Those of you who are from home know that's not entirely accurate, but diplomacy is also about making yourself understood to different cultures, so it's close enough to be a useful working definition, at least for now. Today is introductions, of course, but also your first lesson. You need to tell us who you are, but in a way that makes it memorable--no pyrotechnics or weapons displays, please, this is a class on diplomacy. There are different ones on weapons and making bad decisions this semester. You can explore those kinds of options there. So, as we go around: who you are, what makes you stand out. And the rest of you, you must find a way to remember everyone, and also look interested in the information you're being given. You are absolutely allowed to take notes because there is a quiz at the end: you must recite back everyone's name in the correct order and with proper pronunciation."

He quirked up an eyebrow. "I'm assuming you've already remembered me."

Peridot was absolutely not lost in the stacks.

Just because she had been wandering around for the better part of her shift and had yet to find her way back to the front desk didn't mean she was lost. She knew exactly where she was! She was somewhere past non-fiction, beside the books about Earth holidays and the... large stand of trees.

It was snowing.

Was that a lamppost?

The library was acting up today. Peridot would probably find her way out again by the end of her shift, anyway.
