Today the Danger Shop resembled an outdoor racetrack. Idling next to Bind was an extremely sleek and shiny looking car.

"Technically, today's lesson doesn't actually fall under physical education," he said after greeting them. "But I hope you'll bear with me anyway."

Because who didn't like driving expensive, high-powered cars really fast?

"So," Kanan said, looking out over his class. "Strengths. We all have them. Whether those strengths are things that set us apart as exceptional, or if they simply give us an advantage in areas where others might rather they not, most of us are capable of something at least a little bit attention grabbing. It might not even be related to the reason you're trying to keep your head down. It is possible to be a member of a group of people that frequently falls victim to bigotry and also be an exceptional individual, after all. The fact remains that exceptional talents tend to attract attention."

A pause.

"Unless that ability is turning invisible without first having to get your hands on some kind of cloaking technology. Then, uh, good on you. And if that's a skill that can be taught, I'd love to learn the trick to it." Kanan gave the group a wry grin. "Then again, I can respect how important it is to keep a few tricks up your sleeve. That is the point of this lecture in the first place, after all."

He nodded toward the class.

"I'm not going to go asking any of you to announce what you're capable of in front of a room of people you might not necessarily know or trust," for reasons including but not limited to casual xenophobia, yes, "but I am going to ask you to think about those things and how you might go about disguising them. Hell, we can even discuss hypotheticals. Obviously you don't just go around announcing that you can do things that are easily concealed, like picking a lock or throwing a mean right hook. But if there are any tools of the trade that might give a person away, should they hide them? How about a physique that betrays exceptional physical strength? What do you do about those things that can't be hidden for whatever reason? Can they be used to try to intimidate people into giving you space? Should they? Discuss."

"I've got a role-model for you today," John decided as people began showing up. "Frank William Abagnale, Jr. is an American security consultant known for his history as a former confidence trickster, check forger, impostor, and escape artist. He became one of the most famous impostors ever, claiming to have assumed no fewer than eight identities as an airline pilot, a doctor, a U.S. Bureau of Prisons agent, and a lawyer. He escaped from police custody twice -- once from a taxiing airliner and once from a U.S. federal penitentiary -- before he was 21 years old. He served fewer than five years in prison before starting to work for the federal government. He is currently a consultant and lecturer for the FBI academy and field offices. He also runs Abagnale & Associates, a financial fraud consultancy company. Abagnale's life story provided the inspiration for the film meta for Catch Me If You Can, a Broadway musical of the same name, and a ghostwritten autobiography also of the same name."

What I did in my youth is hundreds of times easier today. Technology breeds crime )

When the students showed up at the Danger Shop, they'd be greeted by an elaborate moddable sundae bar, courtesy of Chilly Boulder, and individual gaming stations, set up to computer monitors, each with a very comfortable chair. Towards the back were several bookshelves, their contents leaning heavily towards various types of genre fiction, but with a few non-fiction and literary fiction titles as well. "Some days, you just wanna eat good, tasty, comfort food an' do your own thing," he said, voice softer than its usual wont. "So that's what we're doin' today. Help yourself to the sundae of your dreams, pick a station to relax in, an' then do what you want. You can play games on the computer, or watch TV shows or movies, or snag a book an' curl up in the chair. Whatever you wanna do. Just have a fun time doin' it, a'ight?"
