Given Face hadn't heard of anyone being too broken during the week, he was going to mark his book display from last week a success, regardless of whether it had actually had any effect on that outcome.

Secure in the feeling of a job well done, he was sitting back and enjoying a book.

Hey, look, kids. Today, you had a teacher who wasn't lurking out in the hall to see what you'd do. Feel lucky, or something.

"Hey," Atton greeted them lightly. "So last week, I took a good look at how you people handle a bailing scenario. Only one of you managed to squeak their way out, so step it up, class."

Go on, Anders. Feel smug.

"Which is why this week, we're taking a good look at the steps involved in a decent escape," he said, wandering up to the smartboard. He drew a 1., then wrote, 'EVALUATE.' "Step one, determine whether you want to keep going on the present course, or maybe it's a good idea to get out. For instance, you've been here for twenty minutes and I still haven't shown up. The situation feels like a trap. Is getting out worth risking springing the trap? Are you going to get in trouble for breaking the rules? Are you even breaking any rules, considering I haven't been around?"

He tapped the board.

"This one's important, and we'll talk about that today. But, moving on. Step two. Tie up any loose ends. Is there anything you can do to make sure nobody will come looking for you? Can you make it harder on them to follow your tracks, if they do come for you? Sometimes you don't have the time to preplan, but if you do have it, take that time."

The next step was, of course, 3. "Pick a good destination," he said. "Sometimes there's only one, especially if you're just trying to get out of a fight. Sometimes you have the time to work on it. Pick somewhere you can get lost in the crowd. And finally..."

He wrote a big four. 'FOLLOW-THROUGH'. "You can get away with failing any of the previous steps," he said. "For a while, anyway. But if you don't have follow-through, you might as well forget it. Two of you were startled by me showing up yesterday, but one of you stuck the course and talked their way out instead of getting distracted. Follow-through makes all the difference."

He cleared his throat. "But let's get back to point one," he said. "Evaluate. I know a lot of kids at this school have a bloated sense of their own capacity to handle a crisis or win a fight. You have to shake that. I want you to sit down and make a list of where your limits are. At what point does a crisis or fight become impossible for you to handle? Be honest. When you're done, read up one and explain them to the class. Discuss if it makes any sense."

Class met at Portalocity today, and Hannibal waited until they were gathered. "Good morning. A good bit of what we now think of as Western gourmet cooking is based in French recipes. So, I thought that we would start in France." He nodded to Lottie if she were there. "Please stay close once we arrive; Paris is a large and busy city."

The portal dropped them off outside a restaurant; it was late afternoon. Hannibal ushered them all to the end of the colonnade. "These are the gardens of the Palais Royal, the royal palace. Those of you who aren't familiar with France, it hasn't been a monarchy for some time; it now houses some government offices and a library. But as you can see, it is still a lovely view." He smiled. "Today we will be dining at Le Grand Véfour." He read it to them, since the French pronunciation might be strange to some of them. "This restaurant has been here in one form or another for centuries, and is currently helmed by chef Guy Martin. The food is a mixture of traditional and modern French. I expect you to have questions about it; please ask. We're here to understand what we're eating as well as to enjoy it."

And with that, he led them into the restaurant.

Today Barry decided to add his own contribution to the book display which mostly involved hard to read science publications that hypothesized about time and interdimensional travel.

You know. For those who still wondered how the heck they got here.

“CLIFF DIVING.”

The class met this week on the edge of the preserve. Eliot, who had a large bag of supplies slung over his shoulder and a walking stick, gave Parker a bit of side-eye.

"Yes," he said. "After we hike out to the cliffs."

“Right, that,” Parker agreed. “I brought wetsuits again.” She pointed to a few duffel bags. “Because it’s warm out, but the water is still cold. And if you want to dive in just your clothes, that’s okay. I brought towels. But you might regret that is all I’m saying.”

"Those of you not into throwin' yourselves off cliffs," all, like, three of you, "I'll be setting up some campfires at the top. If you're interested, I can show you. If not . . . I got stuff for s'mores."

Parker was maybe rubbing off on him.

“Or you can do both,” Parker pointed out. “If you wanna dive for a bit and then decide you’re not up for it again. Or vice versa. No limits, people.”

"Only requirement is the hike," Eliot said. "Which you might wanna get used to, since stuff we're doin' on the island is all gonna involve walking to it. It's a shorter one today, though, only about ten minutes. Keep an eye out and see if you can spot any of Fandom's weirder wildlife."

Like those green deer people always talked about. Eliot hadn't really seen one. He wasn't chatty enough.

“Let’s get going, people! Hup hup hup!”

That last bit was for you, Eliot. Heee.
