Evan showed up for his library shift today looking a little more awkward than usual. Sure, the kilt he was stuck in technically covered more of him than the shorts he usually wore did. And really, he wasn't even feeling awkward about it for what might have been the usual reasons. It was just that his own actually bore a striking resemblance to an Egyptian shendyt, and it was fastened with a letter A, and really, island? We were doing this today?

If anybody needed him, he was lost in the stacks, putting books away and looking grumpy. Don't ask him what the A stood for. Just don't. He'd make something up. Maybe it stood for France.

Kitty was at least in a better mood today than she had been last week, which was probably good since she was planning on making everyone argue today, basically.

"A couple weeks ago, before things went even more insane than usual, we were talking about being able to argue without being a jerk about it. Which is one thing when you're on the internet. Sure, people are more likely to be terrible when there's some anonymity there, but you have the ability to look over what you're going to say and edit it before you hit post and put it out there. In real life, you don't get that time to plot out what you're going to say, and their reaction is more immediate because you can see it.

"So today, you're going to debate some topics. I want you to come up with a cause that means a lot to you, and talk about why it means a lot to you. And then everyone else gets to give their opinion on it, especially if it's different. You can talk about any cause, whether it's mental health or mutant rights or something specific to your home, and you can feel free to ask any questions you need to to form a real argument. Just try to be as civil as possible."

"Apologies for last week," Batman said, kicking things off in a classroom for once. "A visit to Gotham was unavoidable and the timing was unfortunate. Unfortunately, this leaves us with only two classes before your final."

"Because of that, we're going to focus on legalities today. Technically speaking, vigilantism is illegal. If you're on especially good terms with the local police or the government, you might be able to get deputized or some other kind of official sanction," Batman explained. "My situation in Gotham is less clear-cut. At any moment, the police could choose to come after me. But I've proven myself and won key allies, so they're much more likely to ask for my help instead."

"But if your city isn't as welcoming as Gotham," Batman joked with a completely straight face... You had to know Gotham... "you have to realize that attacking a criminal could expose you to legal issues. It could be considered assault. If they're injured, they could try to sue. You may be responsible for destruction of property."

"A mask doesn't just protect you from your enemies, it also protects you from the courts," Batman explained. "But it also keeps you from the courts. If you stop a crime, you can't just leave the criminals, bruised and tied up. There needs to be proof that they weren't just beaten up by someone for being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"Security cameras, witnesses, fingerprints, photographs... Use everything at your advantage to make sure that if you stop someone, they can be prosecuted," Batman said. "This will also help you defend yourself from the assault charges I already mentioned."

Batman got into a bit more detail about the rest of this as the class went on, but the basic point was clear: no hitting stuff today!
