The welcome picnic yesterday and the late night spent awake in a common room with some of the new students had served to remind Evan of just what things were like for him when he was still new to the island. He'd never found the weirdness all that weird (try going to his last school), but he did remember being fairly lost. He was not in Kansas anymore, after all.

... Nor had he ever really been, but he hadn't known that at the time.

So today, he took some time to pull out some of the island's old periodicals, both the Fandom High Times and the Fandom Island Weekly Gazette which I couldn't find a link for, setting them out on one of the displays, so they'd be difficult to miss. Further consideration had him scrounging around for some of the more topical titles that he'd seen floating around the stacks since he'd started working here, from So You've Turned Into A Dog to Gremlins And You: The Myths, The Facts, And How to Live it Down.

He figured he'd managed to dig up a fairly decent selection.

He also didn't think for an instant that any of the new kids were going to take any of this stuff seriously. Their loss.

Kitty started out class by sitting on top of her desk until everyone who was going to show had filed into the classroom, at which point she got up to close the door.

"Hopefully that's everybody," she greeted them, and smiled. "I'm Kitty Pryde, and this is Self-Expression. Which, in case you don't know, is how you manage to get across to other people who you are and what you think. And it's hard enough when you're a teenager to figure out who you are in the first place, let alone what you want to put out there for the rest of the world, or in some cases how to say what you want without putting your foot in it. Then you throw in self-consciousness and the occasional cultural thing that prevents you from saying or doing things... So the point of this class is to try and help you get through that, taught by someone who probably could have used more of a filter when it came to this stuff."

At least she had some insight on herself at the grand old age of twenty-one.

"Today we're going to go ahead and be cliche, and we're going to go around the room and do introductions. I want to know who you are, where you're from, and why you're taking this class. Let's start with you there."

Welcome to the Danger Shop, everyone. You were standing on a rooftop, which is where you'll be spending plenty of time the next few months. So get used to that.

As the class began, Batman spoke.

"None of you in this class are new to Fandom. Only one of you haven't had me for an instructor yet," Batman said. "With that in mind, we'll be keeping the introductions brief. I'm Batman. I've spent my adult life waging a war on crime in Gotham City. If you've never heard of Gotham, it's the most crime-infested city in virtually all realities in which it exists. Before me, it was worse."

"The only reason I can justify being here instead of there right now is because I've trained people who can take my place should anything ever happen to me," Batman explained. "These people have chosen this life and chosen to follow my teachings. Even as they become their own people and forge their own paths, their training has given them the tools they need. None of them have powers. All of them have enough dedication to make sure that doesn't matter. Because of that dedication, even when we don't agree, I can trust them to carry on the war."
