Anyone expecting a quiet redhead behind the circulation was in for a rude surprise--emphasis on the rude. There was a lanky brunette behind the counter today, watchful and on edge. There was a knife strapped to her hip and a gun within easy reach under the desk.

Zee wasn't taking any chances with the creepy guys that were suddenly around the island today. She was going to be the sister in view for the rest of the week, their other classes and identities be damned. One surprise attack that had them appearing in one of those weird machines was more than enough, thanks.

Don't expect a lot of help from today's substitute library aide, unless you were planning a trip out to put the hurt on some of those tire-wearing freaks. Then Zee was all yours.

The classroom was positively bland this afternoon. You're welcome for Derek's clear influence in that decision.

Okay, that was a lie. He probably couldn't have stopped it last week either. As though Derek ever had that much control over his own destiny, after all.

Still he was having at least some influence, as Pinkie was completely without additional props or costumes this week, just sitting quietly at the front of the classroom looking faintly concerned. She was even -- wonder of wonders -- looking to Derek to direct the class.

They didn't even have this problem in Equestria.

"If you've been around for more than the semester, you probably know something weird is happening. Because weird things always happen here." And they were usually terrible in an 'oh, I woke up naked in the park' way. "Whatever is happening this time doesn't seem to be one of those normal ones. Stay indoors and away from the gun machines."

Oh, the vending machines.

"Why do humans even have those?" Pinkie asked, though she didn't really expect an answer. "When ponies have problems, we use the magic of friendship. And pies."

Mind you, that magic could turn sentient beings into stone, so not exactly totally nicer than guns. It just played better for the censors.

Derek actually gave her a pat on the vague shoulder area for that one. Because that was how he expressed compassion. Via shoulder pat. FEEL HIS COMPASSION, PINKIE. AND CLASS.

Oh, Pinkie felt it, alright. You could tell by the bear hug she gave him in return.

You didn't really need those lungs, did you, Derek?

Things had gone from worrying to deeply troubling in a manner of days, and so Thor was basically vibrating with the need to go outside and smash something.

"I'd planned a practical exercise for today," he told the class. "But it seems Fandom has done one better and provided a non-simulated situation for you all. So your task is to go forth and defend your home!" he cried, raising Mjolnir to the air. "If you are not the fighting sort," he added after a moment, "then do not feel as if you must head in to battle. But perhaps you could assist in other ways. There may be those who need healing, for example." it was a sign of how much he'd grown that he was actually acknowledging that not only were there some people not "the fighting sort", but that they had no desire to be.

With that proclimation, class was dismissed.

"Are you all here?" Ghanima asked abruptly as the bell rang. "Anyone dead? Anyone kill anyone else?" She waved off anyone who actually started answering. "Nevermind, I'm sure some of you have dispatched some of the interlopers. However, I am not encouraging that today."

"Spies. A resource that is often sadly overlooked. Industrial espionage, eavesdropping on a friend, employing reconnaissance behind enemy lines, all of these count as spying. However, it is not as straight forward as you would think. There are five types of spies," she stated, turning to write on the board:

(1) Local spies (2) inward spies (3) converted spies
(4) doomed spies (5) surviving spies.

"When you have these working together properly, it is your greatest resource, greater than munitions or soldiers or generals. Information, as always, is the most powerful weapon of all."

"Each type of spy has a specific purpose," she continued. "Having local spies means employing the services of the inhabitants of a district, usually to help you detect localized troop movements and to be aware of changes in terrain. Having inward spies means you are making use of officials of the enemy."

"My personal favorite are the converted spies, getting hold of the enemy's spies and using them for our own purposes." Ghanima beamed at the class. "Subversion of a loyalist is always so entertaining."

"Then there's the 'doomed spies'. Some squeamish generals try to avoid this grouping, but they are indispensable to a solid victory. Having doomed spies, doing certain things openly for purposes of deception, and allows our spies to know of them and report them to the enemy."

"Surviving spies, finally, are those who bring back news from inside the enemy's camp." Ghanima said briskly. "There is no part of war more delicate, more intimate, or harder to balance than with spies. As Tzu says, 'None should be more liberally rewarded. In no other business should greater secrecy be preserved.'"

"Your assignment for next week is to ferret out some tidbit of information to which you would not normally be privy," Ghanima informed them. "Either via another spy, or by uncovering it yourself. You will not need to share exactly what you learned, merely the method used to discover the information."

She wasn't saying it had to be from the newest residents, but, well, Ghanima knew that if she didn't give them an actual assignment, some of them would probably go do something stupid. A few would go be stupid anyway, but at least this mitigated the chances of disaster.

Certain actions had taken place. Now, there was nothing to do but wait. For a little while.

Help had been promised, and it was about to be given. For better or for worse. Well, worse. Worst, actually.

Somewhere on Pandora, Doctor Patricia Tannis sat in a chair, poking at Science, ignoring everyone and muttering erratically to herself. This was not in any way an unusual occurrence. In fact, even the horrible timing wasn't anything out of the ordinary. The Vault Hunters had gotten used to it.

Maybe too used to it.

There had been a lot of faint arguing since Lilith had last shown up... )

Today, there was merely a note on the Danger shop door. No class.

No class because things are happening on the island.
Get your arses to the library or somewhere else useful instead.

Guess what! Jess had been in town for a couple months and hadn't dealt with anything like invasions or creepy guys or anything and had zero coping methods for it!

Guess what also! There was a sign posted on the door to the classroom!

CLASS IS CANCELED
due to A LOT OF WEIRD THINGS
Bring your book reports next week or slip them under the door
You still have a final next week.

Sorry kids.
