"The thing about technology," Oz began. "Is that no one really knows what the next big thing is, sure the various bits and bobs will be lying around waiting for someone, or several someone's to all realise at the same time that they can make something interesting when all put together. Which means that most peoples visions of the future are reflections of their present, with a bit more shine or grime depending on the optimism of the age."

"What does that mean? Well, today it means you get to experience one vision of the future from the seventies. Enjoy."

The Danger Shop looked quite a bit like a courtroom today, only with a big projection screen where the judge would normally be. What could be going on?

"Today we're going to watch a live trial. However, since most courts in the area don't allow students led by a man in a bat costume to be spectators, I had to make special arrangements," Batman explained as the screen started to show the interior of a courtroom.

SPOILER: of course the trial they're watching is going to end in a courthouse brawl. )

The table in the student council room was filled with subs and chips today, along with bottles of soda and tea. There was also a Grace at the table, working her way through a turkey sandwich one layer at a time, because she was still at an age where she could totally get away with that sort of thing.

"Hi folks. I think we started making some good plans for Thanksgiving last time," she said once everyone was settled in. "So, my suggestion would be to hammer everything out there, and think of anything we might want to work on after that."

Don't ask Sia how she ended up in front of the class today. Just don't. The important thing was that she was here and the Ice King was not.

"Our teacher isn't here today and I'm sure we're all very disappointed about that," she said. "But since we're all here, we have a movie. About princesses, apparently, so at least we're on theme."

And then she pushed the button on the TV and took her seat.

Overall, Billy had a lot of boring tasks to deal with today - restocking books, cleaning and dusting shelves, searching for wayward trash left behind by sentient novels - but he had his iPod with him today playing the soundtrack to Jekyll and Hyde, and that was making everything way more dramatic.

Hopefully, no one passing by the library's doors would be offended by his attempts at singing.

"Hey guys," Clint said, after having ushered everyone to a classroom. "I was told it was likely that our portal today would take us to somewhere in the 1700s - with no specifics on what year in that entire block of a century we might land in - so I decided a movie might be a safer bet." He might have been stupid adventurous enough to give it a shot, but not with students.

Sapience

Kaidan had written the word on his holographic display in really big letters. It hung in the air in front of the class.

"Sapience," he said, "Is a step beyond sentience. Sentience presumes some level of self-awareness. Sapience presumes a human - or bigger - level of understanding and intelligence. Humans are a sapient species. So are, at least in my universe, asari, krogan, turians, quarians, salarians..." He nodded towards Mordin if he was there. "'Course, to compare them all to humans could be considered racist. Each of these species has had their own experiences, their own homeworlds, and so their own philosophies and ideas. Sapience is a big thing. It's not something we can easily predict. We're still not even sure exactly what makes a species sapient in the long run. Hell, some people are still arguing about whether or not humans really qualify."

He cleared his throat. "If there's anyone here who's from a non-human species or who has known members of a non-human sapient species, I'd like them to come up here and tell us a few things. If you want to. After that, we're having a class discussion. What do you think marks the difference between sapience and sentience?"
