They were back in the Danger Shop again today, and Hannibal nodded at the students and waved them over to his counter at the front.

"Now that you've learned a bit about employing different types of cookware, you should be able to start with a few sauces. In classic Western cuisine, there are five sauces which are referred to as 'mother sauces'; this is because each of them can be used as a base for many other sauces, so once you learn each of them, you've mastered a good deal more than just one sauce."

He had five dishes in front of him, and indicated them in turn; there were enough little spoons to go around.

The first is... )

It was time for class again and Riley had thrown together a class at some point last night when he'd been unable to sleep. Apparently, insomnia was a time for productivity.

"Welcome back, guys," he greeted, nodding at them. "Today, we're going to talk about the Baltic Sea Anomaly. This is actually a fairly recent event. In 2011, a Swedish diving team made a bizarre discovery in the Baltic Sea."

Riley held up a picture of said anomaly.

"The researchers said it was 197 feet in diameter which means it wasn't a small object. But, they had no real explanation as to what it was. The researchers thought it was stone but no volcanic activity has ever been reported in the Baltic Sea so it had to be something else. In 2012, the team returned to the site of the anomaly to do more research and hopefully figure out what the thing was. After reaching the site, the team reported that all their electronic equipment, including a satellite phone would not work within 200 meters of the site. After closer examination, the anomaly was described as a 'huge mushroom' with a thick pillar rising 26 feet out of the seabed with a 13 foot thick dome on the top. Ocean X. the research team, says they observed wall-like features on the formation’s surface, straight lines, right angles, and circular shaped stones."

He paused and passed a copy of the picture out to the students. "In July of 2012, it was suggested that the object may be a Nazi anti-submarine defense system that was used during the Second World War, which had wire mesh to confuse British and Russian submarine radar. If the anomaly is an anti-submarine defense system, the discovery could have historical significance. It could also help explain why electrical equipment has been known to not work near the area. "

Riley crossed his arms and smiled. "And, of course, there are people who think it's a UFO or even a secret government spacecraft. The location of the anomaly is completely unknown to this day. Everyone has an opinion on this thing. Me? After the things I've seen recently, I'm gonna go with some secret government facility but I might be wrong. So today, we're just gonna talk, take it easy. Tell me the strangest thing you believe in. Are you someone who believes in ghosts and aliens and angels? Or are you a cold, hard scientist?"

Riley nodded at one of the students to get them started.

Today, there was a stack of music books on the circulation desk when William arrived.

Deck the halls with-

"No," William told it sternly.

We three kings fr- the next one started up.

"No."

The holly and the ivy-

"That's enough," William told the books, shaking a finger at them. "I understand you're eager, but wait until Hallowe'en is over, at least." Remarkably enough, they listened.

"Good morning," Anakin said, striding into the room with his mug of coffee. "I trust you all enjoyed your weekend. In honor of Halloween, half of you will find full-sized candy bars under your desks. The other half of you will find nothing."

Ah, envy.

"Now you had no reason to expect that you would get anyting merely for showing up today, and yet some of you might be feeling ripped off, or that I'm playing favorites." Anakin shrugged. "There's no expectation that the universe is going to behave fairly, or, barring that, behave unfairly in your favor, but there seems to be something inborn in us that expects to be treated with equity."

Anakin began pacing the room. "From an ethical standpoint, people talk about 'trying to level the playing field' or offering everyone equal opportunities to achieve greatness. But everyone in this room knows that even if the opprtunities are equal--and they never are--the people who get to take them aren't equal. Some are smarter, some are taller, some aren't that interested in working very hard. You've each assessed the students in this room: you know where you stand on any number of variables from popularity to usefulness in an invasion."

He leaned back against his desk and crossed his booted legs. "I've also heard someone talk of 'running your own race'--that is, concentrating on your own goals without caring about how other people are doing. But when other people might have so much more than you do, is this a very realistic thing to ask? Is there a way to stop envy and jealousy from seeping into your life?" He shrugged. "I was born a slave on a desert world on the very far edge of civilized space. Because I had an extraordinary talent in the Force, I was taken to be trained by Jedi in the capital of my galaxy...but I was nine years behind where the rest of the students my age were already--they had started training when they were toddlers, or near enough. I wanted what they had, and so I worked harder to become better, but I never felt, even years later, like I was given the respect I deserved for the accomplishments I'd made. They'd had a much easier life than I'd had, and I both envied and resented them for the bubble they surrounded themselves with."

He shrugged. "Then a war came and Jedi began dying and no one was all that sheltered any longer, but making everyone equally miserable can't be the only way to solve jealousy. Have you come up with any coping strategies?"

"Right," Herc said to get the students' attention at the beginning of class. "Remember your kata? I hope you do, even though it's been a few weeks, because you should be practicing on your own time. This is not a 'learn in class and then don't worry about it until you need it' kind of subject. And now you're probably thinking, 'oh, great, we're gonna have to do that bloody thing again,' but you would be wrong. Today you're going to start learning a new kata. Pay close attention."

Herc demonstrated the new kata for them a couple of times, then said, "Got that?" and, "Good," without waiting for a reply. "Pair up and help each other get the hang of it."
