Week two, and the students were back in the Danger Shop theater, because it was tradition, and because Jaye didn't care to learn to program anything else in.

"Last week we covered Nicolas Cage's early work," she began, "and this week we're speeding up in time to 1987, a little comedy about people who steal a baby. Yes, I said comedy. Trust me, it works. Or, you know, don't trust me and just watch the movie anyway."

Okay, so it wasn't quite perfect barbeque weather, but Thor was gonna hold class outside anyway. On the deck of the dorms where he'd set up a barbeque.

Because according to the Google, today was a holiday in the Kingdom of Canada.

"The people of the Kingdom of Canada mark the beginning of summer on this day of celebration," Thor explained. That wasn't quite the official reason for the holiday, but whatever. "And so, I thought we should do the same."

To that end, he was grilling several hamburgers and some (maple glazed, of course) bacon. Yes, he'd even remembered to make sure there were vegetarian options, even if he himself did not quite comprehend why anyone would willingly forgo eating meat. There were picnic tables decked out with red-and-white tablecloths and set up with condiments, as well as bowls of potato chips in flavours such as dill pickle and ketchup and a cooler filled with cold pop.

Accompanying the burgers was poutine, and for dessert? Butter tarts and Nanaimo bars, naturally.

There were tiny moose wandering about the stacks today.

William wasn't even sure what to make of that, until he remembered that, oh, yes, today was the day that celebrated Queen Victoria's birthday.

So of course there were moose. Because Canada.

The sky was overcast, but the temperatures weren't terribly low and the threat of rain not so high that Ender opted to stay indoors. Instead they were out on the dorm lawn again, a bag of sandwiches sitting in what would soon be the center of a circle of students.

Before he started talking in general, he glanced towards Yeul and said, "I'd like to see you after class, please."

Then his attention shifted. "Last week, we experienced some interesting events," Ender said, only a little dry humor obvious from his tone of voice. "The peppers were a nuisance, that's for sure. I hope all of you made it through unharmed and unsinged." They usually did at Fandom-- he didn't think he spotted any major injuries.

"Now, the phones are a semi-annual problem. I've experienced that one several times since I came here. I always don't realize what is going on until I've already made a few calls of my own - and I'm always left wondering what prompted me to respond in the first place," he said. "What is it that makes us want to say something back when someone says something to us? Why can't we just let obviously confused, crazy people be?"

He shrugged. "Maybe it's because our lives are built and supported by our ability to communicate, so when someone communicates oddly at us, we're alarmed," he said. "Maybe we've just all got tempers. Maybe we're just trying to turn a freak occasion into some amusement for ourselves. Or maybe it's just human nature for the entire tribe to start shouting when one member does."

He stretched his legs out. "How was your week?" he asked.

Today, the overly muscular blond teacher had taken his rightful place at the head of the class. "Good morning," he said, "and welcome to Summer Fitness. I'm sure you all introduced yourselves to each other last week--and I do apologize for my absence--so I'll just introduce myself this week. I'm Steve Rogers, and I'll be your instructor. Mr. Rogers is fine. So let's just get into it. We'll do some warm-up exercises and then we're going to climb a rope."

Once again, Bruce's class was set up in clusters of desks, with a first-aid kit stocked with several rolls of bandaging and bandage tape on every table. There was also a dummy on the table at the front of the room, but none for the students; it seemed that after the lecture and demonstration, the students would be practicing on each other.

"Hi," Bruce said from the front of the room. "Uh, so today we're going over basic bandaging techniques for simple injuries that need compression. There are three main kinds that we'll look at today – circular, spiral and figure-eight."

Writing this class is teaching me things! )
