This week, the Danger Shop was set up to look like an immense hall in a military base. Large, imposing, vaguely demon-like giant robots stood against the walls.

Prof Tomoe's usual coffee cup had a logo reading NERV on it this week. "We've talked a lot about male mad scientists so far in this course," he said, "and the field has been largely male dominated for most of its existence. But that does not mean that women cannot also be pioneers in pushing the boundaries of science in areas better left unexplored. Today, we're going to examine the work of Dr Yui Ikari.

"In this universe, a major cataclysm happened 15 years ago, destroying Antarctica, causing general global annihilation, and unleashing a wave of vengeful non-humanoid angels bent on destroying the human race. Tokyo was decimated in the flooding, so Japan's base of operation was moved here to Tokyo-3. Dr Ikari was tasked with creating something to fight off the angels, and she and the NERV Organization came up with the Evengelion units."

He pointed up to one of the giant robots. "You may be wondering what makes these Evangelions different from your typical giant robot. Firstly, they're cyborgs built from a mix of cloned angel DNA and robotic parts, powered by the souls of dead mothers. Secondly, in order to control them, the pilot must dress in a skintight plug suit, be completely immersed in amniotic fluid, and try to sync completely with the Eva unit, or be ripped to shreds by the Lovecraftian angels rampaging across the world."

He grinned brightly. "So, who'd like to try one?"

The class met in a regular classroom today, which tended to feel really weird to Jaina this far in. Mostly because she kept forgetting there was an actual classroom for this.

"I had a Danger Shop simulation ready to go for you guys," she said, "and then this morning it was completely gone and while I can recreate it, I'm not that fast." Which just made this morning more annoying. "So we're going to say this is a lesson in improvisation and actually watch a movie for once. And um, I feel I shouldn't have to say this but I'm going to anyway: don't actually do anything you see in it? You're all smarter than that."

"Hello class," Anakin said, coming into the room with donuts and coffee to share with the group. "Hopefully your time with your classmates over the last week has fostered greater understanding about where they are coming from and helped open your horizons a bit. This week, in this dimension and country, we celebrate Thanksgiving, which is a time to take stock of all of the things we have to be grateful for: friends, family, good health, not being bitten by a gremlin in a few weeks, whatever you can think of. It's also a time to visit family and not get into a fight with your wife's grandmother about politics."

That last part sounded very rehearsed.

He put the donuts down where the class could reach them.

"This weekend posed its own kind of ethical dilemma for many of you, if you woke up with powers you weren't used to having, or without some you were accustomed to keeping under control. Someone unused to telepathy might not know how to control listening to other people's thoughts, those who just acquired lightning might not mean to set things on fire, but it still could happen. My question today is: are you still held up to the ethical mores of, say, not moving everything two feet to the left just because you can, if you are new to having the powers?"
