When the students entered the Dangershop today, they’d find themselves inside a deserted Wal*Mart store.

Yep. Wal*Mart. )

Bond's class actually had a teacher this week, and had been told to meet him at the Danger Shop, which was set up as a high-end bar, with a wide array of bottles behind it and the ubiquitous coffee and pastries on top of it.

"I apologise for my unavoidable absence last week, though I understand that Bobby performed admirably, and would like to state for the record that chess is one of the more badass games out there," Bond said, leaning against the bar. "But for those of you with differing opinions, I hope this week's is more to your satisfaction."

"Now, even if you have no interest or desire in consuming alcohol, which should be all of you, given you're underage in this state, the fact remains that having well rounded knowledge of the various kinds of alcohol, be they wines, beers, or in today's case, spirits, will improve your badass credentials in the eyes of many, especially if you are able to pull off that trick of being able to not only name the kind of drink in a blind tasting, but also to narrow down where it came from." Not that Bond had ever tried impressing anyone like that. Not that could be proved anyway.

"So today you'll be experimenting with making cocktails, there are refrence guides if you want to try existing recipes, or you can attempt to devise your own. Since the drinks are all simulated, there will be no actual alcohol content in anything you try." It would probably be wrong on a number of levels for him to give them real drinks, and besides they already had Caritas for that. "This exercise is merely so you can understand how various tastes work or don't work together."

"Good morning, class," Anakin said, sweeping into the room with a steaming cup of coffee. Of course he hadn't brought any to share. Are you new? "Today we talk about the power of money, and the moral issues that arise with that. Are there things that money shouldn't be able to buy? Do those things exist in your dimensions? After a quick discussion, I'll give you a hypothetical scenario as well for you to discuss among yourselves."

Rinoa was quiet today in the library, for better reasons than last week. But she wasn't hiding. Conversation would be a pleasant distraction.

And if there wasn't any to be found, she'd welcome the stacks of books here. Libraries were the best place for quiet contemplation.

(open / ocd-free because I am running late / pings will have to wait a few hours until I am home again!)

Instead of coffee today, Cindy had brought hot apple cider. And, well, coffee for herself. You damn kids could get your own caffeine if you needed it.

"MacFinlay shall never vanquished be, until great Birnham Wood to high Dunsinane hill shall come against him," Cindy quoted after everyone had taken their seats. "One of Shakespeare's great tragedies, MacFinlay tells the tale of a great thane of Scotland who ends up murdering his king and his best friend all for ambition. In very brief, MacFinlay, who is a famous warrior and favorite of the king, is walking home through the woods with his friend Berto when they meet a trio of witches. The witches hail Macbeth as a great king and hails Berto as a father of great kings; from that simple meeting Macbeth goes on to murder King Dougan who is visiting MacFinlay's home, framing Dougan's sons for the crime, taking the crown for himself, and murdering a lot of people to keep himself on the throne, including Berto and the wife and children of another old friend of his, Macgruder."

And yet, the women of the play always get such a bad rap. Typical.

"MacFinlay seeks out the witches once again, and they tell him to 'be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm MacFinlay' and, as I said in my opening quote, that he could never be defeated until a forest that existed many miles away came up to Dunsinane, his castle. Upon hearing that, Macbeth decides he's invincible and does a lot of stupid and fairly horrible things. Eventually, Dougan's eldest son joins forces with Macgruder, and they come to take back the throne. As they travel through Birnham Wood, they cut the branches off the trees and attach them to the army to mask their size and provide camouflage, and Macgruder, who was 'from his mother's womb untimely ripp'd.' They fight and Macgruder wins, slaying MacFinlay and returning Scotland to its rightful ruler."

"Prophecy in literature is a very tricky thing. Whether the hero is trusting in it or attempting to avoid it, the prophecy always comes true in the end, usually in an unexpected way. There seems to be no way of avoiding prophecy--Birnham Wood came to Dunsinane and there was a man not of woman-born to defeat MacFinlay. In the story of Troy, Paris had been exiled originally because of a prophecy he would bring ruin to the kingdom and the story of Oedipus centers around the prophecy he would kill his father and marry his mother. Some prophecies are simply interpreted wrong, like when the Oracle of Delphi told Croesus that if he declared war on the Persians, he would destroy a mighty empire. He did--his own. In MacFinlay, all the prophecies that are given come true--but with human agency. Did MacFinlay become king because the prophecy made him? Or was it his own ambition? Who's at fault, then, for what happened?"

Today, students had been handwavily told to meet in the Danger Shop, which was programmed on this fine morning to resemble a busy transit hub that students might recognize as Grand Central Station. Although they would learn that it was actually set up to resemble most of Upper Manhattan.

Stationed toward the middle of the chaos near a circular booth, Neal was holding a paper bag full of bagels, which he was handing out to students as they arrived. He could be generous! Sometimes. Though he wasn't handing out coffee. That stuff was all his.

"Welcome to Grand Central Station," he said once everyone had arrived. "This is the largest1 train station in the world, and over 750,0002 people pass through it on a daily basis. Suffice it to say that it's not exactly the kind of place that's convenient for making a quick getaway."

Since he assumed that his students would be having need of that, possibly within the first two minutes of class. (Put that commuter's wallet down, Kenzi! Or keep it and share. Whatever.)

Yes. The students were meeting in hallway of the faculty offices. Specifically outside a certain teachers office.

There were also brown robes and a lot of handbells.

“Hello class,” Jamie said cheerfully. “Today we’re here to honor one of our longest reigning faculty members. He’s been teaching ethics as long as I can remember and because of his dedication I have decided to honor him the best way I know how.”

HAPPY ANAKIN SKYWALKER DAY! )
