doubleohblonde: (Bond is Bond)

Instead of last week's cars, the vehicles which greeted the students were much smaller and more robust,. The Danger Shop itself was set up to resemble a large, flat field.

Bond laid one hand on the quad bike. "Quad bikes like these are a form of what's known as an all terrain vehicle, used largely in situations where a car would not have the necessary manoeuvrability," he began. "They handle much like a motorbike, but with slightly more stability. But only slightly more."

"Today's class will be focused on getting a feel for controlling the bikes. So if you will all change into the provided safety gear, then we can get started."

Alaric had managed to get a generator going in the classroom, so the lights were on and it was warm, but he wasn't in the best of moods and the students probably weren't either. What can you expect of a classroom full of people who couldn't have coffee this morning?

Well there was coffee now, along with hot chocolate, and a projection screen that had the title menu of something called An American Werewolf Rome playing on it. Alaric was standing by the light switch in the room, ready to dim them as soon as he was done talking.

"Okay, well, congratulations to those of you that trudged through the snow to make it in. You'll either be ecstatic or pissed to know you made your way here for a movie day. Sorry, it's hard to remember to bring lesson plans and all that stuff when your power is out," he said. "But I've brought warm drinks to make up for it."

"So this movie isn't the best film ever in terms of acting and storyline, but the special effects are pretty cool and it is about werewolves though all the facts aren't completely accurate. Well, we'll get to that next week," he said. "And sorry about the gratuitous ass shots in the film."

Or he wasn't sorry, if you enjoyed that type of thing.

Sure, Kūkaku knew she could get a generator for her classroom. Hell, she could be the generator for her classroom if she wanted, but then why would she want to deprive her poor little students of a practical lesson, hmmm?

At least there were lights, if nothing else. They were in the form of carefully protected lanterns that the twins had painstakingly hung up from the ceiling before class that morning, and Kūkaku might has used a little bit of her talents to make sure they were bright enough to work by. Heat, on the other hand, was going to be a different story.

"Morning!" Kūkaku had on her cloak but, besides that, seemed relatively unaffected by the chilly classroom. "So some of you may have noticed a little power outage from the snow we got. Personally, I think we're all jus' lucky the extreme change in temperatures didn't cause the world to explore or nothin'. I know your reading chapters for this week were on the states of matter and transitions between them, but I think today we're going to do something a little more thematic.

"Simply put, we're skippin' the lecture right now and doin' the experiment first. We're going to make some energy, using chemical energy and the heat of combustion. Obviously, any of the dangerous elements are out of our reach, but you've got a lot of the basic ones at your disposal, as well as a few basic laboratory tools. If ya want, ya can be boring and make fire, but remember, fire needs lots of fuel to burn and I'm not lettin' you scorch half the lab. Or, you can try to get a little more creative and see what other ways you can make energy at your station for you and your partner. Pretty simple, right? But here's the catch. When you're done, you get to explain to us all what you did, what chemical reactions were involved, and blah blah blah. It could be worse. I coulda made it be a written report."

"Before we start, any question about the reading material for the week? Or any questions about this week? If not, let's get started. The longer you wait, the colder your get, but I don't think too many of you will have a problem coming up with something for this one."

"Ahh, thank you to all my little ducklings who braved the cold to be here again this week ♥!" Shunsui said with a bright smile at all his students who had extra large mugs of cocoa today in their little circle. "Some of you may have been aware, and I'm sure some of you didn't, but yesterday was a day reserved to honour a very important man in the modern history of pacifism, and we will talk about that man today ♥. His name was Martin Luther King, Jr., and he inspired an entire nation, as well as the world, to achieve civil rights through nonviolence and nonviolent protest ♥. King himself was inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, who will will be discussing much later ♥."

I Have a Dream. )

"So let's take one last good swig of hot cocoa to warm us up, and we'll bundle up and head out ♥! We have quite the march ahead of us with the weather out there, and that in itself will be a testament to our hardships ♥. I doubt they had to deal with blizzards like this in Alabama ♥!"

Today's planned lesson got scrapped; there was no way in hell Cindy was going to try to get generator power working in the Danger Shop. The class could wait until next week to learn about money.

Instead, Cindy sent out an email saying We'll be studying TV and movies today in class. Feel free to skip today's lesson in favor of researching them in the dorms. All of you should be checking email regularly now, so no complaining you didn't get this. --C. Perrault

For those that did show up today, Cindy had set up a small coffee pot in the room once she'd gotten the generator going and was blasting the heat, so at least the room was toasty. "Welcome to those of you who made it. In the 21st century, one of the primary forms of entertainment is watching the television. In developed nations, the majority of homes have at least one TV, and many have several. TVs offer a variety of programming, including news, nature documentaries, sporting events, talk shows, dramas, situational comedies, and more. For all that people complain that there is 'nothing' on, there are hundreds of hours of television programming aired every week. The difficulty comes in finding something that appeals to your particular tastes."

"Movies are stories filmed with moving images. These can be seen on the TV, or in movie theaters, where they can be watched on a large screen and with an advanced sound system. Going to the movies is considered a common dating practice, as a trip to the movies offers both entertainment and also a semblance of privacy, since the lights go down to better view the screen. Most movie theaters have codes of conduct which they expect people to adhere to. The biggest rule is minimal talking during the showing, and as technology has improved, they've added such rules as: silencing cell phones, no texting during the film, and no illicit recording of the movie."

"Both television and movies have been subjected to censorship, in regards to what is suitable to be shown to which audiences. In the 1930's, Hollywood introduced The Hays Code, which was replaced in 1968 with the MPAA's rating system. Propriety on the television is monitored by the FCC, which has the right to fine and punish stations which air inappropriate content, as usually defined by a watershed or 'safe harbor', which is the time delineated for adult programming. Programming with adult themes--usually graphic violence, sexual content, profanity, and drug use--can be shown only at certain times for the protection of children."

With that, Cindy judged she'd given them enough of a background and turned on the DVD player. "Today, we'll be watching 'Blink,' an episode from Britain's iconic Mister What. It does well as a stand-alone episode, in that you don't need to know much more about it than the title character is a time-traveler who gads about saving the day a lot. Enjoy it."

Had Rikku been thinking, she would have gone down to the shop and grabbed her back-up generator. But it was cold, so she wasn't.

Class today was going to be taught by candlelight, and with a roaring fire in the middle of the room. There were also plenty of blankets and mugs of hot chocolate waiting.

Rinoa was bundled up at the library today, glad that the generator seemed to be working. She was quieter than usual today, knowing that there was a memorial service to attend this afternoon. She hadn't been especially close to Raven, but she wanted to go. The other girl had been kind, and several of Rinoa's friends were distraught and might need support.

Until then, she was here, distracting herself with busywork.
