"You know how to open, you know how to close," Nathan said as he passed around the week's handouts. "Now for the part that comes in the middle: dealing with witnesses. Today we're going to focus on cross-examination. This is when you're questioning witnesses that were called by the other attorney. We're going with this instead of your own witnesses because your own witnesses should be like reading from a script. They should know what you're going to ask, you should know what they're going to say. If you've done your prepwork there shouldn't be any surprises here.

"Dealing with someone else's witnesses is where it gets tricky," Nathan continued. "You want to make them support your case without alienating the judge or jury in the process. One way to do that is to ask leading questions. There are examples of leading questions in your handouts.

"For today's exercise I want you to pair up," Nathan said. "Remember last week's case of Police vs. Jack Jones? We'll be using it again, only this time with cross-exam. Pair up. One of you is the lawyer, the other is the witness. Those of you playing the witness could be Jack, one of the police officers, whatever you like. It's the lawyer's job to try to get you to tell your story through leading questions. Once you've gone through it, switch roles so that you both get a shot at being the lawyer. I'm here if you have questions."

Although her mind was preoccupied with promised meals of questionable edibility and shirts that her crooked frame practically swam in, Adah Price came into the library with an experiment in mind, an experiment on Pride. With the exception of the white intermingling with his brown fur, Pride was almost completely opposite of his mother in every way. He was younger, he was quiet, he didn't nibble on everything in sight and, most importantly, he was male, and thus the chances of him being pregnant and birthing a litter in the Librarian's office would not be so much a thing of burden, but a thing of extreme medical fascination and interest. So she brought the little brown rabbit with her to the library, having a feeling that the quiet, unmoving Pride would be a much better library companion than Bob had been.

He sat on a corner of the desk, occupied with a piece of lettuce, while Adah settled in behind the desk.

"To conduct scientific research has, until recently, been the reserve of those with the ability to fund it - historically this has meant patronage or the self-funded enthusiast and now scientists studying at the cost of an institution or business. Governments can and do cut costs - particularly where there is no immediate practical application," said Mohinder.

"NASA budgets are cut dramatically, and drugs research is the province of a few pharmaceutical companies. When the outcome is uncertain and any potential gain distant research becomes difficult even to start." He went on to discuss military funding.

"Does the source of funding for research affect the science? Can such research be unbiased, or are company interests always at heart?" Mohinder continued more lightly, handing out notes, "More immediately, can you persuade your classmates to fund one of these projects?"

"Next week is your final exam," Anakin said, leaning against his desk. "So this week is your final chance to ask me any questions you might have been wondering this semester. You can ask me about ethical scenarios you or someone else might have encountered. You can ask me my favorite deadly sin. You can ask what makes me think I'm so qualified to teach this, anyway."

His lips pressed together. "Though I wouldn't recommend that final question. Ask whatever you like. I'll try to answer it honestly."

He glanced around the room. "Who wants to start?"
