Mike had handwavily instructed the class to meet in the classroom today. There was not a computer in sight, just a teacher drinking lots of coffee and a television set. "I had to make a slight change to the syllabus since my computer crashed and I lost the presentation I had been working on," Mike said apologetically. "That should be a lesson in itself. When you're working with a computer, hit 'save' frequently and make regular back-ups. If you have any trouble figuring out how to do that, see me during office hours."

He took another gulp of coffee before continuing. "This week we're supposed to be covering spreadsheets, but when I thought about it, I realized that you guys probably won't need spreadsheets all that much. So here's spreadsheets in a nutshell. They have rows and columns of empty spaces. You plug in numbers. The computer calculates stuff based on what you need the spreadsheet to do. If you think this is something you need to know more about, see me after class."

After answering any questions if there were any, Mike continued. "For the remainder of class, we're going to be watching the film 1999: An Intergalactic Journey. Pay special attention to the problems caused by HEL 6000, a supercomputer that serves as the villian in this story. Is HEL really that bad, or was he just programmed that way? What does this movie say about putting our faith in technology? And seeing that we're in 2008, how does this picture of the future, made in 1968, differ from the modern world? I'd like you to answer those questions for homework. Oh, and just this once, you can either type up your answers or write them out by hand. Just remember that we will be having a practical exam for the midterm next week and you will want to be comfortable with typing."

[OCD coming up!]

It was a cold and sleepy Anemone that opened the library right on time.

The class met in the Danger Shop which had apparently produced racks and racks of clothes of all sorts and a variety of fun props.

Aly was waiting for the students to arrive and take a seat before starting.  "Today, if the massive amounts of costumes and props didn't give it away, we're going to be talking about disguises.  The whole point of a disguise is to be unnoticeable in the company that you're keeping.  To blend in so that you don't occasion comments like 'I've never seen that person before' and 'I wonder who invited her.'  It's not a matter of satisfying your ego by 'standing out' so everyone notices you.  It's a matter of getting your job done without undue risk to yourself, any of your contacts or your employer."

Aly grinned.  "I love disguises.  They're one of my favourite things about spying.  What you all need to do today is create one using the costumes, wigs, makeup, and props we have here.  You can create it to go with the persona you made up last week or something completely different.  Help each other put together a disguise, a cover, and the reason for the disguise then come show me."

"Some of you have done this before, I know, in my class this summer, but I'm not apologising for the repetition.  Very few things are learned on just one go-about, and almost none of those things are anything useful."

"So go ahead, ask any questions you might have then work together to create a disguise and a cover story.  Let me see what you come up with."

[OOC: Aly might not apologise for the repeated class, but I do.  *kicks non-going off alarm and plans that'll keep me out of the house until 3ishFHT.  OCD is coming up.]

"I thought I'd give you all something of a fun class before the mid-term next week," Lulu said. "At each of the stations, you'll find both a typical pizza crust and a loaf of focaccia. Choose one or the other, top as you wish from the fully moddable toppings here at the front of the class, bake them in the already-preheated ovens, and then at the end of the class we'll have a contest for the best-topped flatbread." She grinned, an uncharacteristically wide smile. "Remember that not all pizzas require a tomato-based sauce, so try cream- or oil-based ones if you like. Also, focaccias tend not to have a sauce in the way that pizzas do, although you are free to experiment there if you wish.

"If you're not familiar with either focaccia or pizza, there are handouts at your station as well for you to read before you begin. If any of you have questions or concerns," and here she eyed a few of the students who had been... having difficulties, "please, please approach me."

"I'd like to give you a reminder as well: next week is your mid-term. You will be required to prepare a full meal, three courses -- salad, soup, and entree -- of your choice. You are notpermitted to use recipes directly from this class. The library, I'm sure, has a wide collection of cookbooks, and the internet as well has many resources for recipes. Find them, and then bring them in for next week. I'll be providing the dessert for the meal. Feel free to invite your friends to share in the food -- I imagine that many of them will need the break during the week."

[OCD will be up in a moment is up! I apologize for the lame-ish class, but I slept in today, and so it's a bit of a rush job. ^^;; Also, mmm pizza.]

"In honor of tomorrow's holiday, today we're talking about Family Law," Nathan said as he passed around the usual handouts. "I'll spare depressing anybody by talking about divorce. Instead let's talk about law and family at its very basis. What, according to law, is a family?
Good question! )

"Personality reconditioning," Juli said quietly, as soon as her class had gathered and had settled down, "is what we will be discussing today."

A person's personality... )

“After that,” Juli said, “I open the room to discussion about the pros and cons of personality reconditioning. What do you think? Compare and contrast your ideas with your classmates and see if what they say has any impact on your own opinions.”

[Wait for the OCD is up! Go to it!]

"Good morning everyone," Richie said with a totally not evil grin. "I hope you're all ready for the weekend. Off the theme of Valentine's Day, a day I'm sure will result in many, many inappropriate and funny situations, we're going to talk about defamation."

Yay! )
