The class was meeting back in the computer lab again, and this week they were all using Windows XP workstations. "I'm going to start by telling you that today's subject may not necessarily apply to all of you," started Mike, totally not looking at Cimorene if she was there.

Word Up )

"Okay, that seems like a good place for me to stop for today," said Mike. "Your assignment for today is to type up a basic one paragraph document, save it, and print it out. The subject really doesn't matter since I just want you to get some practice with working with the computers. I'll be around if you need any help, and you can definitely see me in my office hours on Monday if you have any more questions."

Aly had a projector set up in her classroom when the students arrived this afternoon, and she was waiting on her desk, feet swinging lazily through the air.

"Afternoon, everyone," she said with a quick smile once the group was assembled.  "I hope you all had a good and uneventful weekend.  There was a Mercenary Convention in town, I hear, and I rather wish I'd assigned you all to go to one of the panels on building C4, but I suppose C4 as a rule isn't incredibly sneaky.  So you all lucked out."

"Today we're going to watch an episode of Mythbusters where they take on stunts done in James Bund movies and see if they're physically possible,"  she grinned.  "Some of you know I think James Bund to be incredibly silly and bad spywork so you can guess how much I enjoyed this episode.  Seriously, people, Matty Damon.  Bourne Identity.  Way better.  Also cuter.  Though I'm sure some of you won't believe me."

Aly jumped up to flick off the lights.  "After you watch the episode, go ahead and discuss what you thought with your classmates.  As a last exercise, I'd like you all to come up with a spy stunt that you've seen in a movie, read about, or heard about.  We'll try some of them out next week in the Danger Shop."

Anemone was at the library for her usual shift, thermos of tea clutched like a lifeline.

"Good day, class!" Lulu said, smiling brightly. "Today's class is a little bit simpler than last week's. We'll be making soup rather than stew. You'll find everything you need at your stations. The principles are much the same, except that, as a broth-based soup, it will be much thinner than the stew.

"One thing to know is that, like last week, we'll be using lentils and rice. An important thing to know is that, even on their own, lentils and rice together form what is known as a complete protein -- that is, a source from vegetables that is equivalent to the protein one would normally get from meat. You can even make this soup in a vegetarian version by leaving out the chicken, and using vegetable bouillon instead, although I recommend using more garlic if you do so."

Recipe 1: Chicken Vegetable Soup )

"Also," Lulu added, "if you have any questions about any of the cooking terms -- or about any cooking procedures -- please feel free to ask. That way leads to less... kitchen disasters."

[OCD will be up in a moment is up! I'm around for a couple of hours, then off working on a class project from about 2:30 to 8:30 Eastern. Although I should then be around for the rest of the evening!]

She sat behind her desk, legs neatly crossed, looking thoughtful and slightly distant as she waited for her class to gather. When they had, Juli leaned forward and began her planned lesson. If they weren’t ready to listen to her, well… that was rather unfortunate for them. She was ready to speak.

Last week… )

“After that I give the floor to you, my students, for open discussion of the various reasons—valid or not, in your opinion—that people might have for advocating the continuance of human modification.”

“Please,” she said, again with a small smile, “at least try to respect each other’s opinions even if you cannot agree with them.”

"Entertainment law," Nathan said as he passed that week's handouts around, "focuses on law as it applies to movies, television, music - if it entertains you, there's a lawyer involved somewhere in it. If said lawyer is lucky enough to be with the right performer or studio, there's a nice chunk of change to be made here. If that's the sort of thing you're into."

Nathan leaned against the front of his desk. "Entertainment Law is big news at the moment thanks to a little thing you may have heard of called the WGA strike. This is contract law at its most nitty-gritty, with both sides bringing out their biggest guns to try to get the best agreement.

"That's where you come in," Nathan said. "Pair up. One of you gets to represent the studios. The other the writers. Try to figure out a deal that both of you can live with so the strike can be brought to a close. Who knows? Come up with a good enough idea and maybe we'll send it on to Hollywood. Wouldn't be the first time a bunch of school kids were smarter than the networks."
