Today the class was meeting in the Danger Room.

It was not surprising that there wasn't a scrap of red velvet to be seen anywhere. It always wasn't a coincidence that today's class could get most of the students fake killed in nasty ways.

Welcome to your midterm. )

Bridge bounces into the library a few minutes early to get it ready to open.

"Hello, class," Rose yelled over the blaring music. There were speakers strategically placed around the classroom
and various instruments. "Hope you enjoyed--" she paused and pulled out a remote to tone down the volume, "--that's better. Like I was sayin', hope you enjoyed your week of rest and meetin' the parents but now we're back to our daily grind. An' if you haven't guessed already, music is our topic for today."

"If there's one thing that's universal to all, its music. No matter what time period, reality or dimension you're from there's bound to be one form of music or another." She passed handouts around, "For us humans, our voices were the very first instrument we used but soon enough our prehistoric counterparts learned that if you banged two things together you get an interesting sound, thus our first rock an' roll concert was born." She laughed then paused and winced, "sorry, lame joke. But point is, music has been around for a long time and its evolved with us through various points of history an' most people assign their culture to a certain 'sound' or song.

"It is no wonder music has such a big influence in our cultures. For the moment I want you all to pair-up and share various popular music of your time. There is no judgin' here, if you like bubblegum pop music then that's what you like and fun thing is, you can share it."

When the students filed into the Danger Shop they found two young girls standing with John in the usual lecture spot.

"Hi," the older one said, bouncing a little on her toes. "I'm Susannah Lynn and this is my half-sister Grace. Dad asked us to help him with this class since it's all about us.

"See, there was this big swirling thing, a..... vortex?" She looked up at John for confirmation of the word, grinning when he nodded and then continuing. "And a bunch of us kids got pulled through it and came to Fandom and got to meet our parents before they were our parents. It was really freaky and a little scary, but it was also a lot of fun." She giggled. "Seeing everybody's face when they realised we were their kids was really really funny.

"It was so much fun, that Dad decided that you should get a chance to play too! Isn't that great?" She turned and looked up at John again. "This is where you take over, right?"

John smiled and nodded. "It is. Thanks, Susannah." He addressed the class. "Fandom is always throwing the unexpected at you. And sometimes that isn't a hostile invasion. Sometimes it's the next generation. The object this class isn't to fight the invaders, but look after them. Keep them amused, fed, make sure they go to bed on time... you know. Be parents. And then make sure they get back to where they're supposed to be."

Grace pulled on John's pantleg. "Daddy? I wanna colour!"

John picked her up and smiled wryly at the class. "Sometimes it's easier to just beat something up."

Aly was standing in front of the class when they filed into the classroom.  "Welcome, everyone.  If you don't know me, I'm Aly," she said once everyone was in the room.  "I'm apparently teaching you today so I'm teaching my favourite topic and one you need for everyday interaction with others:  flirting."

"I put eleven rules on the board that I've used in past spying classes to get the students there to think about the connection between flirting and just generally making a good impression on people that you meet."

11 Ways to Start Off on the Right Foot, or a Guide to Flirting.
1. Remain Still and Composed
2. Smile genuinely
3. Maintain as much eye contact as you can tolerate
4. Employ the same body language you would use with an old friend
5. Your opening statement is crucial
6. Assess then focus on the other person's interests
7. Mirror body language and echo speech patterns
8. Plan in advance what you're going to say about yourself
9. Be prepared for likely topics
10. Maintain unshakeable confidence no matter what
11. Work the silences

"Normally I go through these guidelines with a class, making sure that everyone has an idea of what they are.  But I was told this is a Communications class so you should have a basic idea already, right?"  She grinning, looking around to make sure most were following.  "So today, I'd like you to pair off and discuss the rules I have up here - if you disagree with them, if you don't - and then all put them to practice.  I don't care who you pair up with.  If you end up with someone not of your preferred gender, flirt with them anyway.  It's all in good fun and a learning experience."

"If you have any questions, I'll be just over there."

Coffee, pastries, NEWS. A familiar combination. Peter was at the front of the room with a copy of last week's paper to hide behind if certain teachers came by.

Anyone entering the classroom for club will see that Ron has been busy. On the board is a note for today's discussion: "Who's the one person you trust the most and why?"

There are also a selection of high quality chocolates availble for anyone to eat.

However considering that Ron is no where in sight and there's a giant canary squawking angrily in the room you might want to be careful eating those chocolates.

Chuck stormed into the room. Someone was still a little cranky. Chuck sat down at his desk, apparently too defiant to teach standing up.

Squall was sitting at his desk with a plate piled high with cocktail wienies, which he was eating one by one with a toothpick. As he chewed each bite, scowled at the plate disapprovingly.

(Balamb Garden's completely spoiled me for hot dogs.)

At the front of the room were a large TV and DVD player, and at the back of the room was a table full of all kinds of snacks.

When everyone had arrived, Squall tossed out the sign-in clipboard. "Good morning, class," he grunted. "Today we're going to learn how to defend yourself against an alien invasion. Take notes, because you'll be tested on this later."

And with that, he flipped the light switch behind his head, and used the remote to fire up Extraterrestrial vs. Hunter.

[ETA: Just to clarify: Happy Hu Uha Eh Vyhtus Ghufc So Ranedyka Yhofyo! You will very definitely NOT get detention for celebrating the holiday; in fact, that's WHY Squall brought snacks. You may not want to punch HIM, though -- he's got his eye on you.]
