Daisy had a bit more of a serious expression on her face at the start of class today, and rather than dive right into the topic of the day, she waited for all the students to quiet down and be seated, then waited a few moments longer before starting.

"Today we're going to do something a little bit different. We'll still be looking at a literary work that has been transformed into a film, but instead of looking directly at that, I'd like to use it as a jumping off point for a discussion."

She stood and paced the front of the room for a moment.

"Free will. Fatalism. And death. If any of these topics will be difficult for you or your mun, omg to discuss, you may leave now, or at any point during the class. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable. I'll give you a few moments to think about it. Your grade will not be docked if you leave, but I do ask that you think about it carefully rather than take it as a free pass out of class. I am hoping for a good discussion, which I can't really have by myself."

She gave the students a few moments to make the decision whether to stay or leave, then continued on.

Kurt Vonnegut's Schlachthof Fünf )

After the discussion (assuming anyone stuck around), Daisy got everyone's attention again. "Alright. I'll be sending an email as a reminder of this, and to let those who weren't here today know. I've decided what I'd like you all to do for your final project. Pick a book or literary work that speaks to you. One that has themes that you really identify with and agree with. And I'd like you, on your own or in groups real or handwavey to write up a treatment on that book. How would you present it as a film? How would you use the visual medium to express the main theme, to stress the really important ideas? This will be due your last week of class, and I'll give you time in class to work on the projects. Any questions?"

[OOC: wait for the OCD is up (*coughs* and now we're meta-ed). Please note that today's class is not required (though I'd like a sign in at least). The topic being discussed (free will, fate, and death) is not everyone's cup of tea, and if your character or yourself is not comfortable with it, please don't feel any pressure to participate. Class topic is chosen in memory of Kurt Vonnegut. Love him or hate him, he did a lot for literature. *gets off soapbox and back into character, OMG.]

Elliot had handwavily told the students to come to the Danger Shop today. When they got there, they would find three very ... realistic ... human corpses covered with sheets and laid out on autopsy tables, surrounded by the scalpels and saws needed in a dissection.

"So today is the day you get to work in groups and cut up fake people," Elliot said, after the class was assembled. "You'll be using standard autopsy procedure -- and there's a handout describing it, and I can explain more if you need -- to find and evaluate the organs. If you want to try to do a real autopsy and guess at cause of death, that's good for extra credit. Oh, and if the idea of this makes you barf, let me know and we will come up with something else for you to do."

She went on to give a brief talk on the art and science of human dissection and autopsy before pointing the students to the tables.

"Remember, next week is our review session, and the week after that is the final."

When it became apparent that Ares had once again chosen not to grace them with his presence, Sam rolled her eyes at Krycek and went to pull up some information on the internet. Stupid unreliable fake gods.

"So. Since our fearless leader is missing, I thought it would be good to learn what there is to know about Ares, vital statistic-wise. First, a clarification--according to sources, Ares is actually the god of bloodlust, not war, and gloried in bloodshed for its own sake, which, just...yeah, moving on. Second, the words fidelity and birth control don't seem to be in Ares's vocabulary. He had three or four children, depending on who you talked to, with Aphrodite, who was, as you may remember, married to Hephaesteus. And hey, wait, didn't she say she was his sister when she was...nevermind, moving on," she said quickly, "Now, funny story about that. Seems that at least once, he was with Aphrodite in her husband's hall--always a sign of class, in case you're wondering--when he fashioned a net to catch them, then called all the other gods and goddesses on Olympus in to point and laugh at them. Ares, being the manly god of bloodlust he is, ran back to his homeland of Thrace after the incident with his, er, tail between his legs. There are also many, many women, both divine and otherwise, in the myths. Most of them bore him children."

Sam was smirking pretty significantly now. "Then there was the time he got chained and locked inside of a bronze urn for thirteen years, which makes me wonder if he's got claustrophobia issues. In any event, there are few details about that, so you might want to ask him about it the next time you run into him."

She wrote a long list of names please see the family values section or the Wiki article on the board. "Okay, your assignment for next week is to pick one of Ares's kids, name the mother, list what he or she was familiar for, and how they died. Also, if you can figure out whether or not Ares ever even acknowledged the kid, good for you and there will be cookies--which I promise not to bake! Also, for fun, if you would like to bring a dog, a picture of a dog, a stuffed dog, or do a dog impression for next class, that would be a great way to pay tribute to Ares, I think."

[ooc: Sorry about the lameness and the lateness of the post, but I was doing my taxes and forgot. OCD up! in a minute.]

"Good afternoon, children!" Ms Frizzle trilled as she flounced into the room. "School is almost over! Isn't that upsetting? I don't know what I'll do with myself!"

She bounced and posed. "And you know what that means! It's almost time for our science fair, I'm so excited! You can work alone or with a partner to prepare an exhibit on some aspect of science! I'm sure you'll all come up with some wonderful -"

The Friz was interrupted by a loud sneeze.

She blinked and continued. "- wonderful ideas for -"

And another sneeze.

"Valentine! Are you alright?"

He sniffled and shook his head. "Sorry, Ms Frizzle, I just -" Another sneeze.

The Friz clapped her hands together. "I have the most wonderful idea for a field trip! Valentine, open your mouth and say 'Ahhh'! Everyone else - to the bus!"

[[I realise this is about, oh, six hours late. My schedule has been totally thrown off by the end of classes, an oral exam, and the copious amounts of alcohol I imbibed last night. OCD coming up and I'm so sorry. Valentine modded with permission. Play away, post is open for a few days.]]
