Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Kenzi was good with the food thing. Oh yes. She was perched on top of a table, and had three plates ranged in front of her, nibbling off each. Taste-testing was a time-honored way to get the most out of the food experience, and then smuggle the rest in your luggage.

This was Toby's first welcome picnic as a non-newbie and, well- frankly it was just as overwhelming as it had been the first time around.

But the impressive array of food more than made up for it, and so he was taking full advantage of the selection with a couple of piled-high plates. It didn't quite make up for the rain, though, and Toby found himself wishing he had a waterproof jacket of some sort. At least it wasn't too cold out.

Wow, everypony sure looked weird in this town. Still, Pinkie knew better than to stare. That was just rude. And she'd never make any new friends here by being rude --

Within two minutes of arriving, Pinkie had acquired herself a whipped cream beard. Look, you try eating a pie when you don't have opposable thumbs.

Marshall, honestly, felt like an old hand right now. He'd been here a whole two months! Two months with no progress on finding Josie, either here or at Blake Holsey. He needed to do more research on how the island moved around, if he could find anything on it.

First, however, he would research the food, and then see if he could meet any of the new kids.

Sam was there, hanging out on the edge, eyeing up the new kids to see if any of them seemed cool.

She was maybe kind of half hoping to spot Carly, but it was one of those idle day dreams that one knew would never come true.

The wet hadn't particularly bothered Kate when she'd been out in it, but a few minutes of just being plain soggy under a tent kind of did.

At least she had food. Plenty of food, and a bunch of puzzled newbier-than-her's to watch.

And here was Claudia, in her now traditional goggles -- though they were pushed up on her head, today, in light of the lack of sun to keep out of her eyes. She was playing her favorite welcome party game: guess the universe of origin.

So far, she predicted five newbies with "magic" powers.

Jack wasn't keen on the rain, but he was holding out for some socialization. It was better than hanging out with the puppy that was usually his brother. Plus, people! Jack liked people. He smiled and nodded in a 'hey, how's it going?' way at anyone who looked at him.

It had really been a matter of time before Alistair wound up sitting right out here, a pile on his plate so big it didn't just cover his plate, but most of the surrounding picnic table, and eating.

Maker's breath, he was hungry.

This whole water falling from the sky thing had the potential for being a huge buzzkill to Caroline's hopes of an excellent Saturday picnic.

In part because her adorable (http://lastlooksblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/lymelight-candice07.jpg) shoes did not have all-weather in mind, but she was determined to get past that and smile for everyone and hope they at least had the really good cookies on the buffet to make up for the school's inability to control the weather.

This really was too much of a crowd for Simon. He was still there, though hanging out by the edges, watching people.

After all, he'd convinced himself to come mostly to make sure they didn't get more people familiar but not familiar with him and Nathan showing up.

Peter had very nearly not gone to the picnic, because he did have Very Important Things To Do. Topher's information about the Russians was continuing to pay off, and he was setting up a lot of little triggers that should make it easier for him to abuse his brother's triumphant return if he won the war.

(If he didn't win the war, none of it would matter anyway, because they'd all be dead.)

But Val had remarked that people would probably be out making friends with each other and stuff, in an obvious dig at Peter's abilities to network.

So now he was here, looking friendly, and studying the crowd. There had to be some important suckers this turn around, right?

Dolf was late to the picnic. Very late. He almost hadn't gone. In fact, he'd spent most of the morning after coming back from the Netherlands - alone - curled up in a little ball in the corner of his room, crying.

But he'd put on his brave face and gone in the end. He strayed near the edges of the crowd, trying not to look too much, trying not to think about the fact that Cally wasn't here this time.

Cassel was having an internal panic attack over nobody here wearing gloves, but he did his best to keep the fact that it made him uncomfortable under wraps. It wouldn't do to show that kind of weakness on the first day. Of course, to get the full effect of that Cassel should probably take his gloves off, but he didn't want to accidentally expose people to what he could do.

He managed to pick a spot that wouldn't have too many people at his back (he was paranoid, okay?) and picked at a plate of snacks with a gloved hand. Any attempt at pretending to be a cheerful was gone, but he had been the broody new kid before, he didn't mind doing it again.

Wesley was around. The rain was making him not want to be outside, but there were new people and he thought he could manage to endure being outside for a little while longer.

Unfortunately, the island didn't seem to have done anything crazy for the picnic, which was what Topher had really been hoping for. But fortunately, it was at least raining. Still, for the sake of the free food Topher thought he'd stick around for just a few minutes before heading over to his new job.

Except the food was really good. Maybe half an hour.

After talking to her big sibling (cute!) and her new roommate (strange), Miley decided to do what she did best: she made her way over to the rest of the picnic, got some food and started going up to talk to people. She was going to make the best of this. She was a senior, after all.

Kate had somewhere else to be a little later, and she wasn't really feeling the picnic thing today but dammit, it was her last picnic, and she felt halfway obligated to show up and do her thing.

Really, she thought she'd just find the two new additions to her floor's residents to welcome them with the traditional chocolate coins, and head off into town.

Quinn was a bit smug (if damp) as she filled a plate and made her way through the crowd. She felt fresh -- not beaten down by Fandom's excesses, like she had been before her time at home -- but she still knew what she was in for. It was a nice change from the year before.

She surveyed the crowd carefully, trying to figure out who was worth getting to know.

In between hanging out in the staff area where people could meet her if they actually wanted to, Bo decided that doing her job could be a thing, too, so she spent some time wandering through the picnic making sure that... well, something. It didn't exactly seem like the kind (or size) of crowd that was going to turn into a flash mob, but it couldn't hurt to keep an eye out for weirdness, whether it was coming from the kids, or directed at them.

Mind you, the blue-and-gold umbrella probably cut down on the impressive security image, as did not getting to wear the spiffy mirrorshades she'd found wrapped up in one of the t-shirts. They'd just look stupid in this weather.

Anyone standing too near Blind Seer was liable to get a shower, tent or no, as he shook the rain out of his fur. Firekeeper just snickered at the way it made said fur stand up on end after he was done, picking through the food table for something sweet to eat.

Rain? Seriously? That was a first, but it wouldn't stop Jake because this was the sort of weather he was used to. At least they'd kept the food dry and that was important.

Jake was less dry and his shirt was kind of soaked as he'd been enjoying the cool rain. He seemed oblivious to it now that he'd picked a seat inside the tent and was munching on something with too much sugar and whipped cream.

The last time Stan had seen a pink, talking pony had been in Imagination Land. So he was just going to stay on the other end of the crowd.
