Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

He swallowed, rolling his eyes. Why did people always insist on silly things like manners?

"Happy?"

"Overjoyed. What's up, man?"

"Noticed you scoping out the new kids," he said, shrugging. "My guess is, that one?" He pointed. "Probably never left the house before."

Mainly he just liked being around geniuses. Shush.

"Hm." Claudia tilted her head. "That wasn't what I was looking for, but I guess they look a little sheltered. I like guessing who'll claim everything's done by magic."

"Oh, that game." Huh. He gave the crowd another quick once-over. "They all pretty much look normal to me," he concluded. "Oh! Except for that one." He pointed to a tiny, weedy freshman. "Definitely the 'magic' type."

"The normal ones are the worst for it," Claudia assured him.

Then she spotted the pink pony.

"I'm guessing that one is probably a 'wizard' of some kind."

Topher had already been alerted to the presence of the pony. It was still freaky.

"What do you think, student or teacher?" Either one would be just as bad.

"I have no idea. How do you tell the age of a pony wearing an umbrella hat?"

Topher snorted. "Count its hooves?" he suggested.

"I'm pretty sure they start out with four," Claudia said. "Of course, I was also pretty sure they didn't come in pink."

Topher sighed. "You know, like with tree trunks," he said, weary at having to explain the joke. "But yeah, the pink thing's not normal. Maybe it just has a really preppy owner."

Yes, she'd gotten the joke. She just hadn't run with it.

"Are those balloons on its ass?"

Topher peered over. "Looks like," he reported. "Or a very weird tail."

"And giant eyeballs. I think maybe the pony wins for 'weirdest thing in Fandom', today."

"For sure," Topher agreed. "Although I'm supposed to start my new job today at Fixer Uppers, and the owner wants to trade explosives for spider parts with me. That totally ranks."

"You know, I've been meaning to check that place out. Do they have any good stock?"

"It looks pretty decent," Topher said, nodding. "I'm gonna be working Saturdays, apparently, if you ever wanna..."

Whoa. Was he inviting a girl to go somewhere? Red alert. RED ALERT.

"...stop by," he concluded, a little weakly.

Claudia had known her share of giant socially awkward nerds in her time, so she didn't let the weak ending phase her. "Could be fun. Maybe next weekend."

Topher nodded casually, even though inside he was kiiind of freaking out.

"Cool," he said, swinging his arms while trying to mask how very awkward he felt. "So, uh. I'm gonna go..."

His eyes fell upon the food table.

"Get another hot dog."

Claudia, fortunately, knew when to not poke the socially awkward guys. "You have fun. I'll see you around."

"See you!" he called from over his shoulder as he scampered over to the food.

Then he tripped over a table. He hoped she didn't notice.

She did.

She thought it was cute.
