Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"I know, right?" Miley exclaimed. "It's disgusting. I'm telling you, I am so glad not to have to deal with that anymore."

"Nope, you just get to deal with a roommate. I'm sorry for your loss." Not that Caroline had to share anymore, which was something she was still getting used to. "Who'd you get saddled with?"

"Um..." Miley pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket. "Surreal SaDiablo." And hey, this seemed like as good a time as ever to ask -- "Don't you think that's, uh, kind of a weird name?"

"Oh wow, yeah, that's one surreal name," Caroline joked and then covered her face with a groan. "Oh God, I've been hanging around dorks too much!"

No, she didn't care that Bobby was a dog, she was blaming him for this.

Miley snorted with laughter. "Oh, yeah," she said. "That's a winner. Hope you don't mind if I, you know, don't use that one."

"You're sure?!" Caroline snorted "I wouldn't charge you even a little! I hope he...she? God I don't even know, this person, is cool. Really though, in Fandom, even person could be wrong. So did it freak you out that Jake's a werewolf?"

Miley laughed. Yeah, she wasn't one hundred percent sure about Surreal either. Which was probably a bad sign, but for the sake of cohabitating, she was going to go with "she."

"I mean, yeah, it kinda did," she admitted. "There's, uh, not so much with the werewolves back home, you know? But I figure the best thing to do now is just go with it.

"So like, what do you think about vampires? Did you read that Dusk series?" Focus, Caroline.

She hated starting friendships with a giant, fanged lie hanging over her head, and this girl seemed cool enough that she thought she'd give being up front a try.

"Oh my god, are you kidding? I was obsessed with Dusk," Miley gushed. "More the movies than the books, really, because I don't really ever have time to read. But Edgar ~~or existing meta-name for Edward, omg~~ seems so hot. I was totally team Edgar."

A beat.

"Why?" She grinned, and teased, "He doesn't go here, does he?"

"No! But oh my God, I wish he did, I love those books. Back home I was dating this vampire and he used to mock those books so hard for getting it all wrong and for making Edgar seem whipped and letting Jim Grey be all powered and hot, though now I'd argue him on that one, but okay, I'm off-track." Which wasn't exactly unusual for her. "I'm actually a vampire? But a really good one! I don't bite people or anything. Jake would totally rip my head off if I even thought about it, actually."

"Oh!"

Miley... was staring, yes, but it would pass.

Aaaand it passed!

"Well, hey, I guess if there are werewolves, there have to be vampires, right?" she finally laughed.

Oh, Fandom. She was catching on already!

"Exactly!" Oh the relief! Watch Caroline reach to give her new friend a bouncy hug.

"It's so exciting to feel like I can tell people and they won't flip out! God, this town rocks!"

Miley laughed and hugged her back. This place was so, so weird. But in a fun way. She felt like she could get used to it.

"Anyone ever tell you you don't look like a vampire?" she asked, just to clarify. "Like, smoking hot guys, I get it. The whole sexy-danger thing -- which, for the record, is what sold me on the whole Jacob-being-a-werewolf thing. But, like, there aren't any movies about vampires who are actually pretty girls with cute shoes, you know?"

"I know, right?" Caroline sighed, pulling back to admire her shoes again. "We totally talked about this in Paranormal class last spring. I think it's because of all the succubi. Like, guys would rather see supernatural girls be hyper-sexual and literally suck their life force out of them from extreme sex than think about girls biting their neck. Not that you have to bite the neck, but it's the classic example. But for the record? All the other hot, vampire girls I know have killer shoes."

Huh. That was way more analysis than Miley was ever interested in doing on her own, but it made a lot of sense.

"Got it," she decided. And hey, in Dusk-world, it wasn't like people chose to get turned into vampires, so it could just as easily be a pretty girl as a hot guy anyway!

Then she glanced at her watch and realized how long she'd been talking to Caroline. "Alright, so I should probably try and mingle a little more, even with the, uh... ambiguous-gender roommate, but I'll catch you later, okay?"

"Absolutely. And no forgetting the party. I'll come find you to make you hammer out details." Which she could do easily, stalker that she was.

"See you around, Miley!"
