Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"Hey, you're a new kid moving to the third floor in the dorms, right?" Kate asked, stopping by after having spotted this particular girl's nametag assuming she had one omg. "I'm Kate, and I'm here to welcome you to the best floor."

She was already holding one of the traditional gold-covered chocolate coins with the number three on it. Her smile was genuine, if not the brightest it could've been, but she still wanted this thing done so she could leave and go be morose elsewhere.

Miley did have a nametag on, which was the reason she didn't find it slightly weird that a stranger knew where she was living.

"Oh, wow, thanks," Miley said, beaming as she took the chocolate coin. "It's nice to meet you, by the way. I'm Miley."

Sure, her nametag told Kate that, but it was just manners.

"Nice to meet you too," Kate replied, totally able to do that manners thing too. "So, that's just a little token of our floor's awesome. Although I guess I could've gone a little flashier now that there's only two of you new additions."

"Oh, so you know pretty much everyone else on the floor, then, right?" Miley asked. Which begged the question... "What's everyone like? I mean, you know, personality-wise."

"Awesome." Well, it was largely sincere but also the stock answer while Kate was doing what she was doing. "I don't know, it's your basic Fandom people. Lots of different backgrounds but generally a good bunch."

Miley raised an eyebrow. Oh, a totally perfect floor, huh? She didn't buy it.

"Who's the worst person on the floor?" she asked.

Kate snorted. "I'm not at liberty to say." Official business and all that. "Bad publicity."

"You don't have to name names," Miley offered. "Just be vague. I won't tell, I promise."

"Why so curious?" Kate asked, mildly amused. "I swear there's no one you should, like, avoid or anything. Plus, I might be the wrong person to ask 'cause I like playing games with the annoying ones."

"Gotcha," Miley said, making a little finger-gun and clicking it at her. "I'm just, you know, scoping out who I'm going to have to deal with around here. I used to live with my brother, and boy, was that a disaster."

"Well, you basically have to deal with people on your floor about as much or little as you want," Kate shared, shrugging. "It's the roommate you really need to worry about."

"Right," said Miley, nodding, and it kind of sucked that even after all that planning she'd done over the summer, she and Lilly still didn't get to be roommates. "So, uh... do you know someone named Surreal? 'Cause that's my roommate."

Her very weird-sounding roommate.

"I... think I met her at the last newbie picnic?" Kate offered, tilting her head as she tried to remember. "Seemed nice enough, though I'm pretty sure she's from one of the slightly more different worlds. I'm sure you could do worse."

Miley sighed. "I guess," she said, though she didn't sound thrilled. "It kinda sucks, you know, 'cause my best friend moved in with me this summer and we were supposed to live together and be roommates, but then I had to come here. So I'm kind of bummed I don't get to live with her."

"Oh, that sucks." If Kate didn't sound hugely sympathetic (though what little was there was sincere), it was just because her problems this week had been a little more major and, well, she just was like that. "She didn't get to come with you?"

Oh, that wasn't a problem at all, Kate, because Miley tended to assume that everyone cared about her issues.

"No, she had to move to Atlanta," she explained. "But I'm sure Surreal's really nice."

Just, you know, not Lilly.

"She's just not your friend from home," Kate concluded. "You'll get used to it. It was weird for me to be living with a dude who wasn't my brother too, at first."

"Oh, you have a brother?" See, they were bonding! "My brother's, like, the lamest older brother ever. What's yours like?"

Kate shrugged a shoulder. "Smart, polite, kind of quiet, total film buff, nothing like me." And one of her best friends, but the people she'd admit that to were rare. "He's a year younger than me."

"Got it," Miley said, nodding. "Yeah, my brother is exactly the opposite of that. Rude, loud, obnoxious, and we haven't seen the floor of his room for almost six years."

"I hear that's common," Kate replied, wryly, suddenly missing her brother kind of a lot. "But Moosh is kinda special like that."

Her entire family was a bit special.

"Aw, that's cute," Miley said with a smile. "I always wished I could have one of those special big brothers, you know? Although," she added, grinning toothily, "my Fandom big brother? Tooootally different."

"I guess he's kind of cute." Not really Kate's type. Plus she was kind of ridiculously taken; that might have factored into it too, not that it made her blind. "He's definitely nice, though. And his little brother Bobby's adorable, I was his fake sib when they came here."
