Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"I know what you're trying to say," he reassured her. "And I'm not asking you to stop hanging out with anyone. I trust you. That's all that matters."

"Yeah. I think I'm pretty much trustworthy," she decided. "Though you know what they say about cheaters."

"He never was your boyfriend," Jake said stubbornly. She told him so plenty of times even before anything had happened between them.

"I know, though it's nice I'm not the only one who remembers that." Caroline rubbed her hand though his hair in appreciation. "But he called me a cheater and I felt like one in a way."

She was not helping him trying to be better, though. "But you didn't. The island did that, and I was the one who kissed you."

They needed to stop having these serious conversations at the picnic. And he should not be tilting his head into her touch.

"Yeah." Give her a second, she liked remembering that kiss. It was kind of up there in the hall of fame for her.

"You know, I think I just feel guilty about leaving him alone to like, die choking on his own vomit in the night."

"You're not his babysitter, Caroline," Jake couldn't help rolling his eyes. "Besides, he'd just come back apparently." That was the nicest version of the phrase he had to offer.

"Supposedly. Just because it happened once doesn't mean anything," she said, frowning and not wanting to frown anymore. "Can we talk about something else. Like how you totally owe me a cookie? And maybe a dry shirt because my dress is never going to dry out on its own now."

"He's still not your responsibility," he muttered, getting tired of his own mood. This would be a good thing.

He shifted forward, reaching around her to snag his cookies from the table and he offered her both. "Your shirt will dry."

Taking one would require moving her hand out of his hair which she didn't feel like doing so she leaned down and took a bite instead, smiling with tight lips as she chewed.

Maybe he'd be amused or maybe he'd think she wasn't at all funny, she didn't care.

He looked amused at least, and he reached up with his free hand to brush her hair back.

Since he wasn't going to talk to her, she stole a quick kiss before leaning her head down against his neck. "I won't really make you help me move if you don't want to. Even if I think it'd be faster with you and your massive biceps."

"I'll help you move," he assured her, leaning his cheek on top of her head.

"And then leave me there to sleep alone, right?" She was still frowning. She didn't like it when he was all quiet and she felt like it was her fault and she didn't know exactly which of the stupid things she said was what did it.

He frowned and dropped the rest of the cookies back on the table. "Do you want me to leave you alone?"

"No." She sat up, getting back in his face. "God, I want you to be excited again. I could tell you were before! I'm going to have a single," she reminded him. "Do you realize what that means? No one will interrupt us. Ever." Though she might miss sneaking into his room in the middle of hte night when Bod was gone.

She could still do the sneaking thing. Nothing could stop them from still sneaking around.

"I am," he assured her, relaxing as she finally said that and he smiled a little. "Do you think there will be two beds we can shove together?"

"If not, we can totally steal my bed, yeah?" Caroline suggested. "I mean, it's not like I couldn't just carry it down with my stuff... I really miss that big bed."

"Me too," he smiled as he stroked her cheek. "Though the cabin setup was kind of cool too."

Was it pathetic that he'd missed her the past week?

He was only pathetic in that he'd spent a whole lot of time with her just two days earlier, but maybe he didn't want to remember that.

"I did an excellent job with the cabin," she agreed, scratching behind his ear a little. "I was almost sorry to lose it, other than the strange kid I was living with. And the horrible bathroom situation. And lack of useful mirrors."

Oh, he remembered. It just was different.

He hummed happily at the ear scratching, eyes drifting shut and if Bobby had been there, he would have stuck out his tongue. "You managed pretty well."

"Yes I did," she said smugly, pleased that she'd made the cabins not awful for him. Yes, she took full credit for that and for his little bit of humming, so there.

"And you're very pleased with yourself," he murmured, leaning forward to rest his forehead on her shoulder.

"Why shouldn't I be? It made you happy and I did it, so there." Even if he'd helped, the idea had been hers and she totally owned it.

"You make me happy," he agreed and there was a good chance he wasn't going to move unless she made him.
