Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"Oh, yes, I can imagine," he said. Not like he had friends at home, but if he did, he doubted it would be easy to keep up a relationship with them from here. "I suppose it's difficult for people from elsewhere to understand what one means when saying that the island moves around and is occasionally invaded by monsters and talking vegetables."

"I think they've pretty much decided boarding school is code for the loony bin," Quinn sighed. "Apparently there was some rumor going around that I had a nervous breakdown. And I try to keep the weirdest stuff quiet."

"Ah." Wesley had zero solutions for that, since Fandom was actually a little less weird than what his old school had trained him for. "That's quite unfortunate. I suppose they wouldn't be terribly open to visiting you for one of the parents' weekends? If anything, that would prove that this isn't... er... a loony bin."

Unless there was an invasion that weekend. That would be inconvenient.

"Or I can just give up on them and enjoy people here," Quinn said. Because duh. "I only went to my old school a couple years. I can live without them, if they wanna be jerks."

OOC: And here we begin trying to fit in the retcon the show handed me.]

"That works just as well," Wesley agreed.

Then, thoughtfully: "It's quite interesting how Fandom doesn't appear to have the, ah, 'jerk' subset traditionally associated with American high schools. At least not that I've noticed."

"There's almost no throwing slushies at people," Quinn said, and she nearly sounded sad about it. "... wait, American? So England doesn't have jerks?"

Throwing slushies? Now that was something he hadn't seen in movies about schools here.

"More a different breed of jerks," he said. "For example, ah, making underclassmen dress up as girls and -- "

Well, that was an inappropriate story.

"Er, run-of-the-mill hazing, for the most part," he concluded.

"Oh." a beat. "Wait, are there pictures of you dressed as a girl somewhere?"

It might be valuable blackmail material!

Wesley blinked rapidly. "Oh, ah, certainly not," he lied quickly. "No, I made certain to steer clear from such activities."

Lies. Lies lies lies.

"Uh-huh." No, Quinn didn't believe him. "Probably smart of you."

Hey, it wasn't like Quinn had always managed to avoid being photographed in less-than-Kodak moments, Lucy.

"That's my opinion on the matter," he agreed.

Awkward pause...

Equally awkward pause on Quinn's end.

"So," she said. "I should go find Puck before some freshman girl starts drooling on him. Catch up with you later?"

"Certainly," he agreed. Alright, that was a relief. Hooray for the defeat of awkward pauses! "Have a good picnic!"
