Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Miley grinned. "You have no idea," she laughed. "Fun and totally crazy. I guess it'll be nice being somewhere that's not as hectic for a while."

Although if she knew herself? There would be hecticness here too. It kind of followed her around.

"You can totally count me in for a karaoke party, by the way," she added, grinning.

"Oh good! Don't you think it'd be fun? I love singing, not that I'm all that great." She was excellent, though she didn't have a recording contract.

"Me too!" Miley exclaimed, as if she'd never sold an album that maintained the number-one spot on the charts for months at a time. "My best friend Lilly and I used to have karaoke parties, like, all the time. It'll be awesome to have one here."

"I haven't had the opportunity to throw any sort of party in ages," she said, so obviously in need of one. "You should totally help me. It could be like, your introduction to the crazy of Fandom. Especially considering the zombies are kind of the music at the karaoke bar in town. Don't worry, they let us drink to make up for it and I'm betting so long as we promise not to force them to sing - which of course we will anyway - we should be able to get a fair number of cute boys to show with the promise of the drinks being on my dime. Of course, we'll need to make sure the bartender that night is fun. I mean, Nathan still works there, but he might not be too happy with me showing up. Oooh, maybe Jessica! She's fun and an added bonus of hot bartender chick might bring more people, yeah?"

Yeah, Caroline really needed to learn to breathe while she planned things out loud in case other people wanted to chime in.

Being used to Lilly's insane ramblings at home, Miley caught every word of that, and she nodded along. "Yeah, totally," she exclaimed. "Ohmigod, it'll be the best. And I have the perfect dress to wear to a party that I've been saving for a while, so it'll be great. Oooh! Can we invite Jack? And Jacob? They're the only cute boys I've talked to yet, so we should totally invite them."

Well, there was something they had in common -- not breathing while talking. Or ranting, as the case might be.

Now that was certainly something to catch her attention. "Jacob? You think he's really the type to go to parties?" Caroline crinkled her nose like this required a lot of thought. "I mean, I guess I can invite him..."

She so knew it was wrong to tease, but she was curious and a horrible person.

Now Miley was intrigued. "Oh, does he not do that kind of thing?" she asked. "I just talked to him for a couple minutes."

A beat.

Then, curiously: "Is he a werewolf?"

"He already told you he's a werewolf?" Caroline frowned. "Was he trying to freak you out? Because he is, but that's really not nice to do to people on their first day, oh my God. That wolfboy is lucky he's hot. Tell me he was at least wearing a shirt when you talked to him."

"Weeeell..." Miley grinned. "His shirt was kinda soaked. But it was totally on!" Which was almost better. "I don't think he was trying to freak me out. He seemed really helpful!"

And, you know, super-hot.

"Yeah, even I have to admit he's a generally nice guy," she replied. "Which is seriously unfair when you combine it with how freaking gorgeous he is. That eight pack? Hello! But I suppose he didn't bother warning you he has a girlfriend?"

Miley winced. "Ooh." That was a shame, but manageable!

She paused.

"Wait, you don't think he thinks I was flirting with him, do you?" she asked concernedly. "Because I was totally just talking. I mean, yes, hot, but I wouldn't want to steal him or anything."

Miley had a little something called foot-in-mouth disease.

Caroline burst out laughing. "Jake would never think you were flirting with him. He's so oblivious to girls, it's kind of sad. But again, nice guy. He's a good friend to have your back." And besides, he was kind of the one who stole others, ahem. "And I suppose he'll be coming to the party, being as I'm the aforementioned crazy girlfriend and I'll do what I can to make it happen."

Oh! Well. That made things simpler.

"Got it," Miley said, making a little finger-gun and clicking it at her. "Well, cool! Sounds like it'll be a fun party! And for once I can go to a party without my lame brother Jackson having to pick me up afterwards. Please."

"Aww, you have a lame older brother?" Caroline always wanted one of those. "Is he seriously lame or just lame because you're related to him and so you have to say that but all your friends think he's hot?"

Miley laughed. "Oh, he's just lame, I promise," she said. "Really, really lame. Like, so-messy-you-can't-see-the-floor-of-his-room lame." She nodded sagely. "He scared our housekeeper."

A beat.

"Our housekeeper who did two tours of Iraq."

"Oh God!" The neat freak in Caroline had a heart attack. "How can boys be so gross?"

"I know, right?" Miley exclaimed. "It's disgusting. I'm telling you, I am so glad not to have to deal with that anymore."

"Nope, you just get to deal with a roommate. I'm sorry for your loss." Not that Caroline had to share anymore, which was something she was still getting used to. "Who'd you get saddled with?"

"Um..." Miley pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket. "Surreal SaDiablo." And hey, this seemed like as good a time as ever to ask -- "Don't you think that's, uh, kind of a weird name?"

"Oh wow, yeah, that's one surreal name," Caroline joked and then covered her face with a groan. "Oh God, I've been hanging around dorks too much!"

No, she didn't care that Bobby was a dog, she was blaming him for this.

Miley snorted with laughter. "Oh, yeah," she said. "That's a winner. Hope you don't mind if I, you know, don't use that one."

"You're sure?!" Caroline snorted "I wouldn't charge you even a little! I hope he...she? God I don't even know, this person, is cool. Really though, in Fandom, even person could be wrong. So did it freak you out that Jake's a werewolf?"

Miley laughed. Yeah, she wasn't one hundred percent sure about Surreal either. Which was probably a bad sign, but for the sake of cohabitating, she was going to go with "she."

"I mean, yeah, it kinda did," she admitted. "There's, uh, not so much with the werewolves back home, you know? But I figure the best thing to do now is just go with it.

"So like, what do you think about vampires? Did you read that Dusk series?" Focus, Caroline.

She hated starting friendships with a giant, fanged lie hanging over her head, and this girl seemed cool enough that she thought she'd give being up front a try.

"Oh my god, are you kidding? I was obsessed with Dusk," Miley gushed. "More the movies than the books, really, because I don't really ever have time to read. But Edgar ~~or existing meta-name for Edward, omg~~ seems so hot. I was totally team Edgar."

A beat.

"Why?" She grinned, and teased, "He doesn't go here, does he?"
