Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"And me saying over, and over, and over," and OVER, "again that I didn't want to do the same thing just didn't register with you?"

"Well, either your mistake was not discussing when to break up, or," she choked on this part, "breaking up with her at all."

...

Wait. What?

Jaime finally spun to stare at her in confusion. "What?" He'd thought that not breaking up at all was the option that Momoko had wanted.

"I said," Momoko hadn't had time to pull her face back in order, okay? Just pretend she was smiling. "If your mistake wasn't about talking over when, that maybe you were saying breaking up with her at all was the mistake. You kept bringing her up."

"Since when did this become about Dinah?" Jaime asked, genuinely perplexed.

"It's NOT!" Although, it kind of was. At least, Momoko still wondered if he sometimes wished she was more like Dinah. "But you kept saying you made a mistake with her and I didn't know what mistakes you were talking about except those two things!"

And she totally didn't want to believe he wanted Dinah back.

"And you couldn't imagine the third option?" Jaime asked, the hurt coming back into his voice.

What had he done wrong to make her not trust him?

So many circles. She'd said this already, hadn't she?

"I tried to suggest things, Jaime." She sagged, so very tired. "You were totally set on saying they wouldn't work. It was like... Like you'd already decided. Again."

"You made suggestions. I wanted to discuss them! Things aren't as easy as just saying we'll do this or that! And instead of talking about it you..."

Left.

"It totally didn't sound like you wanted to discuss anything I said. And I don't know if it will be easy or not. I've never had a chance to think about it. But I want to; you're totally too important to me not to."

She took a breath and looked up at him. "I don't know what to do."

"You could start," Jaime said softly, "with not running away."

He paused, then opened his arms slightly. "And you could come here..." If... she wanted.

If? IF?!

There was no hesitation. It was actually a very desperate and tearful plunge that she made, rushing to wrap her arms around him. "I'm sorry," she managed, though what she was apologizing for she couldn't say. "I missed you so much. I'm sorry."

Jaime's arms were wrapped around her tightly enough that he knew he had to be hurting her, but he couldn't seem to let go. "You should have come to me," he whispered softly into her hair. "Because I've missed you, too."

It didn't hurt nearly as much as him not holding her had, so there was no complaining. She was also not letting him go. "I'm sorry."

And he wasn't letting go either.

"Me too. I'm sorry, too."

She hugged him all the tighter for that, silent for what felt like ages before finally saying the one thing she'd known she had to say from the beginning, the one thing that had kept her rooted to the spot when she noticed him moving towards her.

"Tha..." She cleared her throat and tried again. "Thank you for the cake."

Jaime had to swallow, a small chuckle rumbling through his chest. More felt than heard.

"Happy Birthday, Akatsutsumi Momoko."
