Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Momoko was mingling and totally recognized the look on Dolf's face.

"Hey?" She held out a drink. "Are you okay?"

Dolf took the drink out of reflex. "I'm fine," he said, much too quickly, and flushed a little for being so obvious.

It wasn't so much obvious except for, well, okay, Momoko thought he seemed really close to how he had been during the stay at Triela's.

"You totally don't look it," she gave him a soft smile. "You totally look like you need a hug."

"No, I'm--" Dolf tried again, but even he could see someone like Momoko wouldn't be as easy to fool as ten-year-old girls of his former acquaintance. He sagged. "No, I'm not okay," he muttered. "Sorry."

About somethings, yes, but not about someone being unhappy.

"Don't be sorry. Do you want to talk about it, or do you just want a hug? I can totally do either," she offered, then paused before adding: "I should warn you, talking about it will totally lead to hugs anyway."

He just nodded, rubbing at the back of his neck and staring at the ground. "I tried to go home last week," he said, blowing out a breath. "It... didn't work."

A grossly vague description of events, but he was having trouble coming up with a better one.

"Ah? I am so sorry, Dolf! You didn't... didn't end up in your own future, right?" She may or may not have a fear of accidentally doing that and finding out her future was horrible...

"What? No," Dolf said, looking up in surprise. "No, that might actually have been better. But I have been trying to call my parents for a long time and they never answered, so my girlfriend and I went home to see if we could find someone, but no one was there, and then she--"

He was rambling now. He blew out a breath. "Well, at least I know my parents are still looking for me," he said, finally. "They tried to teleport me home."

So no one was home? And that made him this sad? She patted his arm. "Maybe they went on a vacation? My parents are always going off together now that my sister and I are older."

"Although they've never tried to teleport me somewhere. Why didn't your parents just order a portal?" Someone didn't know the whole story, sorry. "And where is Cally, anyway? Did she decide to skip trying to keep Nana from licking all the new kids to shreds?"

Dolf glanced away sharply, his eyes going wet again. He rubbed at them with the back of his hand. "They tried to teleport me home," he said again. "But they got Cally."

...

"Oh."

She didn't know why teleporting, but Momoko knew how horrible it must be for him, being left behind.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Dolf!" Both that he hadn't gotten home and that Cally was gone. "It totally wasn't your fault; you know that right?" She set down her own drink and moved to try to wrap him in a big hug.

Despite the warning he'd gotten, the hug was still a surprise to Dolf, whose eyes briefly went big in confusion before he deflated. And went with it, wrapping his arms around Momoko. "I know," he muttered. "I stayed for two days. Thought they'd try again, or send her back, but she's not coming back and I'm not coming home. God, Momoko."

"Maybe they can't try again? Like, they're out of power?" Her arms tightened a bit at his hesitation. "Or maybe there's a time thingie and what seems like days here is only minutes there? It's okay! They want you! They miss you! And Cally... Cally's totally awesome and she's been here, so she can take care of herself and she's totally used to weird! She'll be fine and she'll totally come back or write or something, I know it!"

"I don't know, I don't know," he babbled. "They keep trying but it keeps not going well. Maybe I'm never going to get back. Maybe I'm just going to be here and then somewhere else and somewhere else again, and, and now Cally doesn't get to go home either, and--"

"If... If she's with your family, she'll be fine! Honest! If they've been trying to find you, then they're good people and she'll be okay! She wasn't home here either, remember? Lots of us aren't. It's just a different 'not-home'!" Momoko sighed and continued her hug. "And it's all for a reason, we just don't know what that reason is yet. It will work out, I know it!"

"I hope so." Dolf's voice trembled a little. "Thanks."

What else did you say, really? He'd... kind of needed this hug.

"If you need to, I can listen! To the whole thing if you want? Or I can just let you share some of my birthday cupcakes? They're back in my room, but I totally got enough to share and sweets always make me feel better?"

Dolf smiled. A bit, at least. He pulled away. "I don't want to steal your birthday cupcakes," he said. But he was tending that away, yes.

Momoko let him go, checking his face to see if he was at least feeling a little better. "If you stole them you'd totally have to bake me lots more. And they look like flamingos so I don't think it's easy."

She smiled the best smile she could muster. "But if you want to come by and have a gift of some, you totally can. And if you need to talk, I'll totally listen, okay?"

He didn't look quite as close to melting down now, which was, at least, an improvement. Dolf nodded a little more. "I'll come and do that," he promised. "The... having gifts, I mean. When it's less busy."

She nodded. "Anytime, okay? I'm just down the hall."
