Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Was that really a surprise?

Peter shrugged casually. "Suit yourself. I might go over there in a bit." He reached to take some more chips. "The chipper girls?"

Huh. Now that was harder.

"One of them's from LA," he asserted with certainty. "Got the look all over her. And the other... can't tell. Something's up with her."

"A deep and dark secret," Peter said, shoving his umbrella somewhere between two boards on a picnic table so it'd stay up without him having to hold on. "Now that would be a curious new development, wouldn't it?"

Yes, because no one at Fandom had secrets. Least of all Peter.

"I guess," Topher said, though he didn't know about curious. "Seems like more of a... health thing. Maybe she has three months to live."

Peter had absolutely no secrets to speak of. Don't be daft. Nor did he have an overpowering urge to find out other people's secrets for his own gain. At all.

"Three months to live, and she winds up here?" Peter said, whistling. "Poor girl."

Topher was of the opinion that if someone had three months to live, she should let herself be used for science for the remaining time. Hey, a lot of good experiments could happen on someone like that.

But that was sociopathic, so.

"Yeah, it sucks," he agreed. "Granted, it's just a guess. Maybe she's just on drugs or something."

"If that's the case, then she'll fit right in," Peter judged, stealing more of Topher's Doritos.

"True that," Topher attested. Not that he would ever do drugs. Even by accident. Because drugs were bad.

"But thankfully we live on a magical moving island, so drug-testing is probably off the list of possibilities."

"Maybe," Topher said. "Or maybe some of these Greek plants or whatever are actually drugs."

What was he even talking about?

... Peter eyed him. "Have you been trying out the local flora, Topher?"

Come on, Peter. That would require him to be outside.

"Nope," he vowed. "No flora-testing. What, have you?"

"I haven't even hopped over to that Greek city yet," Peter said, rolling his eyes. "You're the one contemplating the, ah, medicinal qualities of the local wildlife."

"Hey, I was just guessing," Topher defended himself around a mouthful of Doritos. "You're the one who said someone on drugs would fit in here."

Peter snorted. "Well, can you really disagree with that? I mean, look at the teachers they brought in this term."

He waved at the pony.

Okay, yes, there was some crack going around.

Topher stared at the pony. Then back to Peter. "I had not noticed the pony," he said, mildly stunned. "That is... that is special."

"I drink spring water from the bottle," Peter said, "So it can't be that."

"Maybe it's in the teachers' room," Topher suggested. "In their coffee."

"Or maybe there's really a world full of hyper-intelligent ponies out there," Peter mused. "I'm not sure whether that's better or worse, but eh, who cares."

Topher considered that for a moment. "Maybe I can get the pony to let me tinker around with its head and figure out what the hell is going on," he finally said.

It was a good thing he hadn't been around when there was a frog as a student. That would've really freaked him out.

Peter snickered. "Now there's a question," he said. "Miss teacher, can I saw open your head and take a poke at your brains? I promise it'll only give you minor spasms in your left thigh!"

Which was an image that was hilarious.

"Hey, hey, hey," Topher objected, holding up a hand. "If I did poke around at his -- her -- its brain, there wouldn't be any side effects. 'Cause I'm awesome."

"Not even a little twitch?" Peter said, grinning.

"Prooobably not."

Or maybe yes. It wasn't like he had done it before.

"Hopefully it has health insurance."

"Hopefully it won't kick you in the face for asking," Peter said, merrily.
