Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Continuing to go over it was fraying what little control Momoko had left and she really really wanted to go back to her room full of sugary ~~repression~~ goodness now, please.

"It'll be harder. We won't be able to see each other. We'll have more responsibilities," she dropped her head to her hands, recalling that night's conversation AGAIN. "And you kept talking about Dinah. Dinah, Dinah, DINAH."

"But it will be harder, and we will see less of each other, and we will have more responsibilities!" How was this confusing?

"And I kept telling you I didn't want it to be like with Dinah." How could he possibly be more obvious?

"And I was wanting to work harder! I said so! More planning things! Calls, visits!"

She turned back, not even caring that she was crying now, she was so upset. "But you kept saying how it wouldn't work! Kept bringing up Dinah and why you two broke up and that I should know but I didn't because I only ever thought of us being together, no matter how hard it would be."

"You didn't even want to talk about it!" Jaime accused. "You just stormed off!"

"Only after you kept saying nothing I said would work! That you just wanted to talk about when we would break up!"

"When did I ever say that?" Jaime demanded.

"'You know why Dinah and I broke up'," she utterly misquoted, but didn't want to think back to it again for the exact line. That was close enough.

"And you decided that meant I wanted to break up with you?" And just like that, Jaime's expression went from angry to flat-out betrayed.

"I ASKED!" She did not understand his expression or his anger. "I asked what you meant and you said you wanted to talk about breaking up because you didn't talk with Dinah."

Jaime's voice was soft. He tried to hide the hurt, but he rather doubted he was successful. "I said I wanted to talk about what we were going to do, and you thought..."

He choked off, not trusting himself to finish the sentence.

Momoko wanted so much to hold him and be held right now.

"Jaime, I don't know what..." She pressed her palms against her eyes, trying to stop the tears, trying to think. "I thought you wanted ideas. That we would figure out how to stay together even if we were apart. You're too important to me to ever think of not being with you. Even now, it hurts how much I miss you."

"But you just walked off!" Jaime accused, no heat in his voice, just... a sort of exhaustion.

"I didn't! Why do you keep saying that?! I totally stayed and tried to talk until the end!"

"What do you call flying away!?"

Ah. "That was after. I couldn't stay there and just pretend I was okay, Jaime." And he hadn't come after her. "Being in love with you and not being allowed to show it... I've done that; it hurts too much. I had to leave."

"And how are we going to figure out the tough stuff if you're just going to run away?" he demanded.

As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Jaime knew they weren't fair, but they were said, and he couldn't take them back. And some part of him still felt they were fair.

She looked at him like he'd just stabbed her.

"I didn't 'run away'! What's left to figure out when you won't listen to any of my suggestions and just keep saying we had to break up?"

"I NEVER SAID THAT!"

Though now... well... maybe she was right.

"You SAID that you didn't want to repeat the same mistakes you did with Dinah." She was back to speaking soft again, her complexion pale. "I asked what mistakes, because you never said anything about mistakes before. You SAID it was that you decided on a date without talking to Dinah about it."

"You weren't even listening to me, were you?" Jaime snapped. "I said that it was deciding to break up with her without talking to Dinah about it!"

He spun, unable to look at her, unable to let her see how angry he was (as if she couldn't hear it in his voice). "I guess you just heard what you wanted to hear," he muttered.

"That's what I said you said!" She spoke sharply at his back, frustrated enough to finally snap. "/You said the mistake you made when you broke up with Dinah was that you and Dinah didn't decide together what day to break up!/

Jaime was angry enough that he didn't even notice that she'd switched to Japanese and that the Scarab was translating for him.

"There it is again!" he yelled. "You're just hearing what you want to hear!" He stopped yelling to breathe heavily for a moment or two, and then let out a choking almost-sob. "Why do you want me to want to break up with you so badly?"

"/Why would I want to hear that you don't want to be with me?! And I don't want you to break up with me. Ever! I don't care that you're from another world! I never did!/"

Jaime's voice was low and pained. "Then how come when I say 'I made a mistake by deciding to break up with Dinah instead of talking to her about what we should do', all you want to hear is that I want to break up with you?"

That had to say something about her opinion of him, or what she really wanted, or something. Didn't it?

"/You... never said that./" She stared at his back. "That's what I wanted to hear."
