Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"He acts exactly the way he does when he's human," Jack pointed out. "And you fall for it then too."

"What?" Caroline scoffed, wondering if Jack had talked to Jake. "I don't fall for anything when he's human unless you're going to tell me he's really some evil kid hell bent on world destruction, 'cause then, yeah, totally bought his disguise."

"You shouldn't feel bad about it. He does it to everyone and he doesn't even mean to. Everyone wants to look after Bobby. Except Bobby."

Well that was something else to think about, now wasn't it?

"Does that include you, big brother?" she teased. "But I won't feel bad, he needs people. It's a good thing. Other than the demand to be let in and out like, four hundred times an hour. Seriously, I did not expect him to come back after he left the first time." Maybe Caroline just had a way with dogs.

"Looking after Bobby is my sole job description. And he always comes back. Always. Especially when you don't want him to. But you're good to him." Aw look, he was being all sincere. "Thanks."

Caroline grinned. "You're welcome. It's kind of nice that he comes back. I've never had anything to take care of before. Well, not since I killed the class fish in second grade. Bad story. Now I'm way better at remembering the importance of proper food. Though I haven't given Bobby dog food yet."

"He'll eat anything. Even though he's a dog, he seems to know where to find everyone, so I don't think he's going to go hungry if you forget. I don't know how you ended up with puppysitting duties with me, but I'm grateful I don't have to do it 24/7. I woke up with him sitting on my head the other morning. Not okay."

Oh, like he expected her not to laugh at that. "Seriously? That sounds like puppy revenge or something! He hasn't done anything mean to me yet, he just keeps howling and barking like crazy whenever Jake shows up. It's adorable. I think they should start a pack."

"Jake," Jack repeated. "The guy likes dogs?" Someone did not pay attention to his surroundings so much, no. He still thought Caroline was perfectly normal too.

Oh wow, it was kind of awesome to hear him seem so out of the loop. "Kind of? He's a werewolf, so he and Bobby can growl at each other. Dog bonding or whatever."

"He's a werewolf," Jack repeated. He hesitated. She wasn't joking. "He really is a werewolf, isn't he?"

"Yeah?" Now was probably not the time to mention she was a vampire. Maybe Bobby would take that one for her if she asked really nicely. "Fandom's weird like that. Chock full of the last thing you'd expect."

Jack was still for a moment, and then shrugged. "Jake's a werewolf. Check. No wonder Bobby barks at him then. Probably wants him to play with him."

"That's what I keep saying!" See, someone agreed with her! "Not that I'd let Bobby go running in the preserve with a wolf because, come on. He'd get himself killed by the teal deer somehow."

"And I don't know Jake well enough to let Bobby go out into the preserve with him even when he's human."

"Which I don't blame you for at all," she nodded. "Especially since now I feel all special that I get to hang out with the squishy little pup!" And wow did she get all smiley at the thought of his wee adorable doggy face.

"You're gushing!"

"I just like dogs!" Caroline insisted. "And Bobby's adorable, hush!" And maybe she liked being trusted by people, shh.

"What is it with girls finding him adorable?"

"It's the innocence thing," Caroline replied, not even having to think about it. "Don't worry though, Jack. You're totally the hot brother, no matter how adorable Bobby is."

"There's never any competition between us," Jack assured her. "He's just a kid."

"He's a sophomore now, right? I so would've killed anyone who called me a kid when I was fifteen," she pointed out. "I bet the girls knock down his door come Homecoming." Ooh, a Sadie Hawkins theme could be awesome for that...

"He's always going to be eight in my head. You can imagine how well that idea went along with finding out he was seeing the school tough emo girl."

"Nuh uh, Bobby with an emo chick?" Caroline couldn't see it. "I figured he'd go for the like, hyper hipsters. Did you freak out?"

"I laughed at him," Jack replied. "And then told her to stay away from him, which didn't go so well. She was twice his size."
