Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"It has the advantage that people don't try to tell you it means 'star', when thanks, you already know that," Kenzi quipped, then grinned more widely. "So how long've you been here? And where are you from?"

"I've been here for...a little over a year now," Jason said, having to think about it, and it might have shown that he was surprised it had been that long. "And I'm from Gotham, which you might not have heard of. Or maybe you have, 'cause there's a bunch of people from there."

"Nope, never heard of it. But hey, not American," Kenzi added, unfazed. "I've heard of L.A. and New York. And Miami. I wish I was in Miami."

Wait a week, Kenzi, you might get your wish.

"Right now, I wish I was in Miami too. It'd probably be sunny," Jason remarked. "But this place is nice too, most of the time. Did you choose to come, or did you get shipped here?"

The phrasing made Kenzi consider him a minute, then tell slightly more of the truth. "Combination of both. I was going, but it was either here, or this other place. This sounded like slightly better option, you know? How about you?"

"I got sent here by my guardian, but it's turned out to be a lot better than I expected. Whatever the other place was, this is better," Jason said. "Everybody's really nice, especially when it comes to stuff like sharing food."

Kenzi grinned, glad of someone who appreciated the important things. "Nice is good. Cool is better. But sharing is caring, right?" She offered her plate of chips. Tortilla, Cheetos, potato, and blue taco chips. "Favorite thing here, aside from the food?"

Jason gave her a grateful look as he took one of the potato chips. "It'd have to be how open minded everyone is. Like, people don't really care about where you're from or what kind of baggage you've got. I know, it sounds cheesy, but it's kinda nice."

"Seriously?" Kenzi said, somewhat suspicious. "Because the three kids I came in with seemed wildly ... mundane. You know? Not so much with the non-nuclear family shit."

"There's people who are pretty boring and normal, but there are just as many who have all kinds of crap in their past. We know not to judge each other," Jason said, making sure the we was clear there, "and eventually everyone else learns to behave themselves too."

Kenzi held out her palms. "I don't judge, dude." Envy, sometimes, maybe. Mock, but hey, she mocked herself too. Steal?

Well, c'mon.

"Okay. So, how hard are the classes, or are they all cupcakes and misadventures, like Miley's list? I didn't get mine yet."

"It depends on the class," Jason said. "I mean, some are about cupcakes and some are more philosophical. Like, I took a class on fate and destiny and that kind of thoughtful stuff, but it wasn't hard. Plus, I think they make stuff easier over the summer, just because."

"Cool." Kenzi was beginning to think she'd lucked out here, and her P.D. had no idea what kind of place that charity had wanted to send her to. "I can cope with that." And if it sucked in September, well, free room and board for the summer was good, right? She grinned at Jason. "Thanks. I appreciate the low-down, you know?"

"Glad I could help," Jason said. "I'll, uh, let you get back to your taste-testing. If you ever want more info though, I'm up on the fifth floor, room 507."

"202," Kenzi offered, biting into her pizza. "With the hyper kid." Said without irony.
