Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"I tried to figure out what was up with those steam-powered spiders. Other than that, nice lazy summer."

"You're not trying to recreate them, are you?" he teased. "I didn't see more than one, and then Caroline had already smashed it, but it sounded like they weren't all that friendly."

"Of course not!" She might have tried to keep one as a pet. "I just wanted to know how they managed to get so much power when they had to have tiny little reservoirs. And prove to the British guy that they couldn't be inherently evil if they were just mechanical."

"But were they programmed or something?" Jake wondered. It'd been kind of interesting.

"That's what I wanted to find out! But we couldn't find any microchips or anything."

"Well, it wasn't really a microchip time, so..." he frowned. "Still weird. I wonder where they came from."

"Yeah, but how do you program a mechanical spider to perform complex behaviors without one?"

Claudia really, really wanted to know the answer to that.

"I was going to try to bring one back to Artie, but then we ended up in Atlantis and they were all gone."

"There's the smashed one, but it get thrown out. It could still be in a bin somewhere after they cleaned the cabins," he said.

"Huh." Claudia pondered the wisdom of trying to root through the trash for spider parts, then shook her head. "With my luck, I'd find a colony of gremlins in there or something."

He laughed. "Awwww, I bet you'd try to do something cute while bitten," he teased.

"Because substance induced temporary insanity is totally always cute," she joked back.

"Oh yeah, and very photogenetic," he nodded sagely, trying not to laugh.

"And not even a little bit potentially drooly."

"Nah, I think you're safe there," he reassured her. Not that he had any experience being bitten.

"You just want to see me do something ridiculous," Claudia guessed.

"I wouldn't dare," he swore, putting his hand over his heart like she'd just broken it with her accusations.

"Uh huh. Sorry, dude, I've sworn off needing to be rescued from waking up hungover in cemeteries."

Now he was really laughing. "But you and Scully made an awesome pair!"

"We still make an awesome pair," Claudia declared. "Even without intoxicants."

"I am not arguing," he chuckled. "Scully is pretty cool, and so are you. So it has to be true."

"Awwww, thanks! So are you, even if you are wearing a shirt, today."

"I am sorry for the disappointment," he laughed, tugging at the damp shirt. "Who made it rain anyway?"

"I don't know, I think this is the first time we haven't had sunshine at a welcome picnic since we got here."

"Yeah," he nodded. "Guess the island's in a mood." Yeah, Jake would never give up on the notion that the island had moods.

It was one of the few "magic" ideas that Claudia just rolled with.

"Definitely. Do you think it got into a fight with the Isle of Ikea?"
