Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Jaime's face fell slightly. "I... could go?"

If she really doesn't want to see him...

Ah?!

"No!" She started to reach for him, then pulled back. "I mean, no. No, I just. I was thinking you went home. For the weekend." Forever.

"Oh." Jaime's lip twitched again.

"I'm heading back tomorrow morning."

At least she didn't seem to hate him at the moment?

Any hating had totally been over as soon as she'd stood up to walk away from him on Saturday. The rest was all incredible loneliness.

"Ah." She looked away from him and back into the crowd, swallowing hard to try to keep her mask on. "You'll have to tell everyone I said hi; give Milagro a hug for me?"

Are you coming back?

Jaime blinked. "Oh."

"I thought--" he cut himself off.

That's right. She wasn't going to come with him this time...

"Hmm?" She looked back at him, briefly. "If she refuses, you totally have my permission to chase her around the house to give it to her."

...

"And..." She was NOT going to cry. "And tell her she can still email me, okay? If you don't mind, I mean? I'd... like that."

It turned out that it was hard to talk with a huge lump in your throat.

"So... we're... not going to talk about this?" he finally managed.

"Talk about it? I don't want to break up. You do." The face she turned back to him was full of pain. She didn't want to talk if that was his goal; who wanted to hear reasons you weren't wanted anymore?

Jaime blinked. Like she'd just said something crazy.

"What?"

He wanted to what?

There. She'd said it, and now she was having an even harder time trying not to cry. "I said I don't want to break up. I never even thought about it until you started talking about needing to set a date like you did with Dinah."

She gave up and wrapped her arms around herself. "I'm sorry, but... I never once thought about not being with you."

"Wait. What?"

It was possible that Jaime hadn't actually heard any of that.

She gave him a pained look that he didn't seem to believe her.

"Sorry but I totally didn't know I was supposed to be thinking of when to break up with the guy I spent a year being head over heels for, when I'd only been finally dating him a few weeks and my feelings for him hadn't changed."

And with that, she gave up her plate of food and her drink and turned to walk away before the tears could start again.

"Why would I want to break up with you?" Jaime exploded.

"Because I'm from a different world, remember? You said it," she stopped but didn't turn around.

"When did I say I wanted to break up?" Jaime asked, now sounding very, very confused.

'it's not that simple. It can't be. We're... from different worlds'

"'We have to talk about where things are going', you said. You said didn't want to make the same mistake with me that you did with Dinah." Still not looking at him, but her voice was cracking slightly that he'd forgotten even what he'd said. "When I asked, you said deciding when to break up without asking her."

"And I didn't want to do that again!" Jaime exploded angrily.

Was that so bad?

"And you didn't have to." Momoko kept her voice soft so maybe he wouldn't notice she was crying. "I picked a date for you. No need for you to talk to me about what day would be best. You didn't repeat your mistake."

"That doesn't make any sense!" Jaime snapped, his own voice rising as her grew softer.

She... She shrugged. "Did you really think I could sit beside you on a beach at sunset and chat about when would be the best day to just suddenly stop being with you?"

"Why in the world do you think that's what I wanted to talk about?" Jaime demanded. He knew this shouldn't be making him angry. But it was.

Continuing to go over it was fraying what little control Momoko had left and she really really wanted to go back to her room full of sugary ~~repression~~ goodness now, please.

"It'll be harder. We won't be able to see each other. We'll have more responsibilities," she dropped her head to her hands, recalling that night's conversation AGAIN. "And you kept talking about Dinah. Dinah, Dinah, DINAH."

"But it will be harder, and we will see less of each other, and we will have more responsibilities!" How was this confusing?

"And I kept telling you I didn't want it to be like with Dinah." How could he possibly be more obvious?

"And I was wanting to work harder! I said so! More planning things! Calls, visits!"

She turned back, not even caring that she was crying now, she was so upset. "But you kept saying how it wouldn't work! Kept bringing up Dinah and why you two broke up and that I should know but I didn't because I only ever thought of us being together, no matter how hard it would be."

"You didn't even want to talk about it!" Jaime accused. "You just stormed off!"
