Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Miley nodded. "That's what everyone keeps saying," she reported. "I guess I'll have to see it to believe it."

Though it was good to hear that everyone seemed to be filling Miley in on things, Ariel had to admit feeling just a little bit of disappointment that the punch of that particular aspect had gone. "We're probably due for another move here soon," she offered instead, thoughtfully. "So you probably won't have to wait long. I just hope this rain doesn't mean we'll be stuck with two weeks of rain again. I love the rain, but two weeks is too much."

"Two whole weeks?" Miley asked, appalled. "That is not okay. I mean, at home, it's, like, never rainy." Maryland and an island she could deal with, but rain? Never.

"Two whole weeks," Ariel confirmed gravely. "I never thought I'd miss sunshine so much. But if it goes into that again, at least this time, I'm ready."

"That better not happen again," Miley said, holding up a hand. "'Cause if it does, I am so out of here. There have to be a dozen schools in LA that'll take me, even after the deadline."

"Oh, come on," said Ariel with a little laugh, "the rain isn't that bad. And at least it's warm, too."

"Yeah, what's with that?" Miley inquired curiously. "I thought the East Coast was supposed to be cool in September."

Yes, it was September for her back home.

"It might be," Ariel agreed, "but it's July."

Miley stared.

"Are you kiddin' me?"

"Nope," Ariel shook her head. "It's July, I promise. But time travel's another thing that happens here, whether it's backwards or forwards. Most people get it by a couple centuries; I think you're the first that might just be a couple of months."

"Oh." Miley was not sure how to deal with that, really, but she was slightly too concerned to write it off as impossible. "So... when are you from?" she asked, then laughed at the awkwardness of the phrasing.

Ariel had to giggle a little at the question. "To be honest with you," she offered, "I'm not really sure. Where I'm from is so different from here that I'm not sure I can really say for sure."
