Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"I dunno," Sam said. "Just seemed like it needed doin'."

"Just needed doing," Simon repeated. "I see."

No, he didn't. He looked it, too.

"It's, like, tradition," said Sam. Because she'd totally done something similar once before.

He remembered that. With a fatcake wrapper, while waiting for the shuttle on their first day.

However... "I think I've seen better traditions."

"Well, yeah, but it's not like someone's gonna come along and go 'that's it! No more new traditions!'"

"N-no," Simon allowed. "But they might say something about throwing trash at people as a tradition."

"It wasn't a used napkin."

"It was crumpled up."

That made it trash, see?

"Well, yeah. You ever try to throw a not-crumpled-up napkin? It just kinda . . . drifts."

"I don't throw napkins," Simon pointed out. "I don't have a reason to."

"Here," Sam handed him a stack of napkins. "Give it a try. It'll be good for you."

Simon just gave the napkins a thoroughly weirded out look, and didn't take them. "No," he said. "I -- I don't want to throw napkins."

"Come oooooon, they don't bite."

"Why should I throw napkins?" Simon asked again. "Why would I want to do that?"

"Let off a little steam. See if you could throw 'em farther than someone else. For a webshow skit. Just 'cause throwin' stuff is fun."

Sam could think of several reasons.

"Well, I don't want to do any of that," Simon said. "I don't see the fun."

He was far too fond of order and neatness for that.

"Tryyyyyy iiiiiiit." Sam shoved the napkins at him again. She wasn't above peer pressure.

Well, at least he took the napkins this time.

Even if that didn't stop him from still giving her a sceptical look.

Sam made "go on now," gestures at him.

Really, what would it hurt?

Well, the new security lady looked a little intense?

Simon seemed to consider things for a moment, looking down at the napkins. Then he glanced at Sam and there may have been some ghost of a smile, of mischief, that crossed his face. It was hard to tell, though, because just about then there was something incredibly distorted and rapid about the way his head moved, and after just about two seconds of that he was gone.

Except he wasn't, he was still standing there, napkins and all, but invisible.

And here Sam had been thinking Fandom couldn't shock her any more. Silly Sam.

That would be her gaping, there. Then glancing around suspiciously. "Simon?"

Watching her, Simon carefully walked around her. As he went, intending to stop behind her back, he tore the napkins into shreds. It made no sound to anyone but him.

And when the napkin pieces fell on her from above her head they seemed to come out of nowhere.
