Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"Aren't they great?" Caroline couldn't help looking down vainly and kicking up a heel. "I picked them up my last trip to a real mall," she sighed, missing malls... "Oh, you're new, yes? It's so exciting! But I'm sorry to have to break the news about the lack of serious shopping available."

"Aw, really?" That sucked. "I am a major shopper. I guess that means I'll have to take a lot of trips back home to LA to avoid going through withdrawal."

"L.A.?!" Caroline maybe loved her already. "Oh, God, I am so jealous. I used to have to drive like, two hours to get anywhere near civilization. Granted, my town is totally chock full of adorable boutiques but nothing like a whole mall of them. Here in town there's this totally adorable shop, Pixie Dust, with tons of fabulous things, but you know, once you've tried everything on there's no next store to attack."

Oh, so she was one of those.

"I totally know what you mean," Miley said eagerly. "I'm originally from Tennessee, and there was no mall around for miles." No pun intended. "Then my family moved to L.A., and it was like a shoe haven. So many stores. But I'll totally have to check out Pixie Dust."

"Tennessee! Good, I feel less small town now, being from Virginia." It was still small, so so small. "Oh right, where are my manners? I'm Caroline Forbes," she shared with a little wave since she was without name tag this time. "I'd love to say I'm supposed to welcome you, but I'm sure they already gave you a big sibling to help with that."

"Miley Stewart," Miley replied, offering a little wave of her own. "And yup, they did." Conspiratorily, she added, "And he is mega-cute, so I'm hoping I can get him to show me around."

"Oh! I saw your sign," Caroline said, more of a blurt than anything necessary to share. "I mean, you're Jack's sibling, which I suppose makes you part of the family!" And yet she wasn't sure she liked that idea.

Miley tilted her head. "Oh, are you two -- ?" Because if they were dating, that would be... bad. Seeing as she'd just expressed interest in him, and Caroline was practically the first person she'd kind of made almost-friends with...

"Oh God no!" Could her eyes get wider? Probably not. "Um, Jack was my big brother, too? I'm an only child so I decided to latch onto him and his brother Bobby who goes here, too and say we have an extended fake family."

Um.

"Not in a creepy way!"

"Oh, okay!" That was a ton of relief on Miley's face, by the way. A social faux pas in her first real conversation here? Not a good idea. "Got it. That's cool! I love big extended families. Got one myself, actually."

Family was not something Caroline had a lot of experience with, but she smiled like she knew what that was like. "Well welcome! And I promise there's no one better to show you around than Jack. He's a great big sibling. Unlike me, I ended up in a fight with my little the first day. Apparently she thought I smelled. Can you imagine?"

Okay so maybe Caroline wondered if this girl was supernatural, but with her track record no one could really blame her for that.

"Thanks!" Hey, look at that, she was hitting it off already! When she got a minute, she would text Lilly all about her accomplishments so far. But until then...

"Whoa," Miley said, surprised. "She thought you smelled? That's... kinda weird, isn't it?"

For the record, she totally didn't think Caroline smelled.

"Right? That was my response," Caroline added, flipping her hair over her shoulder and wondering if she shouldn't have gone for the ponytail with all the stupid rain. "I got all paranoid and made people sniff me for days. Of course, then I end up looking like the crazy girl, but whatever, that's not exactly new for me. I mean, it's perfectly normal to think 'Oh! I'll get a little sibling and show her all the wonderful parts of the island and not freak her out with zombies first thing and we'll be total B-F-Fs from the start!' And then be disappointed when I'm apparently the one who stinks like a zombie to her stupid nose."

Caroline paused.

"Um. Sorry, I didn't mean to get my rant all over you!"

Miley was totally fine with ranting. That was actually short, compared to what she was used to.

"That's awful," she said, shaking her head. Weird, but, you know, awful. "Was she, you know, all there?" With the accompanying hand gesture meaning "sane."

Caroline laughed. "Oh God, you don't know how tempted I am to tell you no, but sigh!" Yes, she said sigh. "Kate's there, just freaking rude. I'd specify the last name, but I've found everyone here named Kate to be that way, huh. Weird how that works. I don't suppose there's another Miley though, very original. Is that a family name?"

So. Steering clear of Kates. Noted.

"Nope, just the regular kind," Miley answered. "My dad picked it 'cause he thought it sounded southern." She grinned and waved a hand. "What can you do, right?"

"Aww, that's sweet. Mine just listened to too much Neil Diamond," she sighed, rolling her eyes. "I mean, name your kid after a song, but at least don't let it be something they play during baseball games, you know?"

Oh, duh! Sweet Caroline.

"No, that's cute," Miley said encouragingly. "It's one of my daddy's favorites. And he is big with the country music."

"I actually can't complain about it here," Caroline admitted. "There are far less drunken parties where boys decide they know how to sing and want to serenade a girl." She frowned, missing the big parties of Mystic Falls. "Though there really should be. I might have to have a karaoke party or something and see what happens. When you say big, do you mean like, singing it or just listening to it?" She did say she was from Tennessee, after all.

Ooh! A karaoke party! Miley loved those.

"Well... kinda both," she answered, blushing. "Actually... he's Robby Ray. You know, the country star?"

Who she was fully expecting people to have heard of.

"Ooh! Seriously?" Caroline was impressed. Nashville and LA? This girl was likely worth keeping around. "I don't know country music, but I bet that's a fun life!"

Miley grinned. "You have no idea," she laughed. "Fun and totally crazy. I guess it'll be nice being somewhere that's not as hectic for a while."

Although if she knew herself? There would be hecticness here too. It kind of followed her around.

"You can totally count me in for a karaoke party, by the way," she added, grinning.

"Oh good! Don't you think it'd be fun? I love singing, not that I'm all that great." She was excellent, though she didn't have a recording contract.

"Me too!" Miley exclaimed, as if she'd never sold an album that maintained the number-one spot on the charts for months at a time. "My best friend Lilly and I used to have karaoke parties, like, all the time. It'll be awesome to have one here."

"I haven't had the opportunity to throw any sort of party in ages," she said, so obviously in need of one. "You should totally help me. It could be like, your introduction to the crazy of Fandom. Especially considering the zombies are kind of the music at the karaoke bar in town. Don't worry, they let us drink to make up for it and I'm betting so long as we promise not to force them to sing - which of course we will anyway - we should be able to get a fair number of cute boys to show with the promise of the drinks being on my dime. Of course, we'll need to make sure the bartender that night is fun. I mean, Nathan still works there, but he might not be too happy with me showing up. Oooh, maybe Jessica! She's fun and an added bonus of hot bartender chick might bring more people, yeah?"

Yeah, Caroline really needed to learn to breathe while she planned things out loud in case other people wanted to chime in.
