Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"Yeah, this is like extra crazy," Sookie agreed, tilting her head. "And I'm kind of used to crazy. I mean, I'm a telepathic fairy who hangs out with vampires. It shouldn't be possible to confuse me with crazy. And yet, apparently a talking pink pony's still gonna do it."

"One of my friends is here," Simon shared. Still watching the pony. It was mesmerizing. "But he's not the one I know. Not everything that has happened to me has happened to him yet." A pause. "This is stranger. Somehow."

Sookie nodded in agreement. "That happens sometimes. There's a vampire gal in town who says I'm twenty-five in her timeline and engaged to her maker. It never gets less weird." A beat. "But the pony still might win, yeah. I mean, at least it's not some kind of hallucination, if we're both seein' it."

He was thinking about that from a comic book villain perspective, too: hello, Simon's geeky side, nice of you to make an appearance. At least it was an attempt at a joke.

"It'd make us hallucinate more than a pink pony," Sookie said without missing a beat. "Now, if we start to see a swarm of them...."

"We should go to the clinic," Simon supplied with the briefest little grin. "Then look for an evil mastermind."

"If they're really good, they'll at least be acting like they're hallucinating, too," she said with a wise nod. "The real question is motive, though. Why make us all hallucinate little pink ponies?"

Simon took a brief moment to come up with something. "It's a distraction," he decided. "To keep us from noticing what they're really doing."

"We did sort of have that here once," Sookie noted. "There was this fog that made people see things that weren't there. I don't know if it was a distraction so much as just a side effect of what was going on with the rest of the island, though."

"O-oh." Well, that made Simon a little less smiley. Or a lot. "What happened?"

"Um. Standard invasion-y kind of stuff -- monsters and the like -- but there was this fog that sort of...messed with your head, too," Sookie said carefully. "My friend Emma nearly went nuts 'cause of it. She's a telepath, too."

Simon couldn't help but wonder whether Kelly wouldn't benefit from coming to Fandom, but his brow was still furrowed over everything else.

"I'm sorry," he said, because it felt like the thing to say. "It sounds like it was... hard."

She shrugged. "She got over it -- we all did -- but I mean, sometimes that stuff happens here. I probably should've warned you before."

"I've been warned enough," Simon assured her with a faint twitch of a smile. "And there were the clockwork spiders. I knew those couldn't be the worst."
