Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

He frowned and his fingers tightened around her hip. "Because you know I'll help you."

"Ha!" There it was, she'd won after all and so she quit fighting and tried to reclaim her more comfortable position on his lap with an arm over his shoulder. "So I figured with your help it shouldn't take too long. Of course, I'll have to make sure Nathan knows and smooth that over...I have no idea how he'll react or what. Maybe I should get him a parting gift or something."

"You don't need to get the guy a gift," Jake said instantly, not seeing why she would waste him. "It will be fine, just let me know if he gives you any hassle. Do you want me to tell him?"

He was just being helpful. Really. Okay, he really wasn't.

Caroline frowned. "Oh yes, because you telling him sounds like a great idea. What were you hoping I'd say? 'Here, I'll write a note and you can jam it in his mouth after you knock him unconscious!' Seriously Jake?" Sometimes he really worried her.

Ugh. Why did she expect him to be reasonable about this? He sighed. "Never mind."

She expected him to be decent. "Don't do that. I was just telling someone today that you were a good guy, unlike me. I'm the one who holds bitchy grudges for no good reason."

Grudges were his thing, and it was kind of surprising she didn't realise that. "I'm not that good of a guy."

"Yes you are, and I don't know why you hold a grudge there," she sighed, resting her chin on her shoulder. "I was the one who messed up that whole thing. I've tried to take the blame for it."

He sighed and rubbed circles on the small of her back, and didn't the fact that he did prove that he wasn't that good?

"I'll do better," he said quietly. And maybe it'd actually work now that she wasn't sharing a room anymore.

"I'm sorry, I'm not trying to make you feel like an ass," she sighed. "And I guess, if I imagine you and Bod had a thing...yeah, I'd probably act the same way. Only I'd probably have asked for photographic evidence that you were with him."

"Yeah, Bod's so not the right kind of blonde for me," Jake snorted, and conveniently tried to ignore anything else she said.

Right. She remembered too late that she'd slept with Bod, too. Whatever.

"So you say. But I'm just trying to say maybe I get it? And I'd probably get it better if I knew the girls you hung out with, but I don't so I can't really understand fully."

"I know what you're trying to say," he reassured her. "And I'm not asking you to stop hanging out with anyone. I trust you. That's all that matters."

"Yeah. I think I'm pretty much trustworthy," she decided. "Though you know what they say about cheaters."

"He never was your boyfriend," Jake said stubbornly. She told him so plenty of times even before anything had happened between them.

"I know, though it's nice I'm not the only one who remembers that." Caroline rubbed her hand though his hair in appreciation. "But he called me a cheater and I felt like one in a way."

She was not helping him trying to be better, though. "But you didn't. The island did that, and I was the one who kissed you."

They needed to stop having these serious conversations at the picnic. And he should not be tilting his head into her touch.

"Yeah." Give her a second, she liked remembering that kiss. It was kind of up there in the hall of fame for her.

"You know, I think I just feel guilty about leaving him alone to like, die choking on his own vomit in the night."

"You're not his babysitter, Caroline," Jake couldn't help rolling his eyes. "Besides, he'd just come back apparently." That was the nicest version of the phrase he had to offer.

"Supposedly. Just because it happened once doesn't mean anything," she said, frowning and not wanting to frown anymore. "Can we talk about something else. Like how you totally owe me a cookie? And maybe a dry shirt because my dress is never going to dry out on its own now."

"He's still not your responsibility," he muttered, getting tired of his own mood. This would be a good thing.

He shifted forward, reaching around her to snag his cookies from the table and he offered her both. "Your shirt will dry."

Taking one would require moving her hand out of his hair which she didn't feel like doing so she leaned down and took a bite instead, smiling with tight lips as she chewed.

Maybe he'd be amused or maybe he'd think she wasn't at all funny, she didn't care.

He looked amused at least, and he reached up with his free hand to brush her hair back.

Since he wasn't going to talk to her, she stole a quick kiss before leaning her head down against his neck. "I won't really make you help me move if you don't want to. Even if I think it'd be faster with you and your massive biceps."

"I'll help you move," he assured her, leaning his cheek on top of her head.
