Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"Well, why put out all this food if you're not going to feed the people who are hungry," Alistair asked, sensibly. He looked up. "Alistair, new teacher, nice to meet you."

Nevermind that he was barely any older than she was.

"Ariel," she offered in response with a nod. "Old student. What are you teaching? Is it food related?"

Hey, she may have a soft spot for cute teachers who taught about food, so it was worth asking.

He laughed. "Sadly, no," Alistair said. "I'm teaching about adventuring, or rather, what you shouldn't be doing while you're doing... that."

"Which, really, is even better than food," Ariel noted. "How to Avoid Misadventure, by any chance? I signed up for that one!"

She'd hold back any comment about how badly she actually needed it.

"Ha ha!" Alistair said, triumphantly. "A student! My student! Wow, somehow I was starting to think they'd just made you lot up."

With a triumphant statement like that, Ariel felt herself straightening with pride. It was hard not to, even if all she really did to become one of his students was write down her name. Really, though, she did have good luck with singing herself up to things...

She laughed a little herself. "Why would they do that? And there's students all around you right now, so that should be pretty good proof that we exist. Though I don't know who else might have signed up for the class."

"Oh, I don't know, just because they'd... be... playing a prank, on me," Alistair said, slowly. "...but that would be mean. I don't know why I thought it."

"A lot of people think people are playing pranks around here," Ariel offered helpfully, "although, usually, it's because we've been telling them about all the weird stuff that happens. Having students usually isn't one of the weird things, though."

"Oh, that depends on who you ask," Alistair said, "The clerics at the Chantry would be pissing themselves laughing if they found out about this."

"Have you ever had students before?" Ariel wondered. "Your first time teaching?"

"I've pretty much always... been the student, so to speak," Alistair replied, hands moving as he spoke. "You know, 'Alistair, this is how you hold your sword', 'That's not the way you should move your hands when you use this technique, Alistair', 'Alistair, don't put the dangerous artifact in your mouth...'"

"'Alistair, don't have any fun,'" Ariel said, adding one perhaps from her own repertoire of such comments to the arsenal with a little shake of her head. "But you're going to show them all, right? Eventually, it's just natural that the student would upgrade to the teacher."

Not that Alistair was all that sure he'd be good at it, but... "I really do wish the clerics could see this," he said. "I'm going to try and teach you kids," who were at best four years younger than him, "Things that actually matter."

"You're not...nerrrrvous, are you?" asked Ariel, who couldn't pass up the possibility of actually getting to tease a teacher about something.

"Nervous? No, perish the thought! Of course not. Me, nervous?"

Your babbling was showing, Alistair.

Ariel bit her lip to keep from laughing; she cleared her throat so that she could compose herself enough to give a grave nod and agree. "Certainly not!" she said, not at all mimicking him, really! "Why should you be?"

"Besides the danger of being laughed out of my classroom, possibly in my small clothes?" Alistair said. Or tried to joke. Whichever. "Absolutely no reason at all."

Oh, sure, Alistair, give the girl ideas! Though, really, she supposed it probably wasn't good to be thinking of any teachers in their..ahem...small clothes.

"I don't think that will happen," Ariel offered supportively. "I think you'll do fine. I mean, I like you so far. And I'm pretty hard to convince."

No, Ariel. No, you weren't.
