Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"I know" she nodded happily, not caring that she still had half a cookie in one hand. "Which is why I try to let you."

"You try, huh?" he laughed and his fingers brushed just under the hem of her dress. "So what room will you be in now?"

He was terrible. "I don't know that I should tell you that until I have you carrying my stuff..."

He raised both eyebrows at her. "Mmmmm, I don't hear a question in there."

Oh fine. "Jake, will you help me move?" Caroline batted her eyes and attempted to put on her sweetest, most innocent face for him.

"Hmmmmm," he tilted his head, pretending to consider it. "I should check my agenda first."

"In that case, you check your agenda and I'll see who else will help me," she told him, moving his hand and shifting like she was going to get up.

Oh, she played a lot dirtier than he did and his arms instantly wrapped around her so he could her back against him. "You'll do no such thing."

"Oh won't I?" Caroline laughed, struggling to make him let go - up until her cookie fell. "Now see what you made me do?"

"Not my fault," he said stubbornly. But he still had two cookies on the table. "And you won't."

"Totally your fault," she told him, putting actual effort into removing his arm now. "And why won't I?"

He frowned and his fingers tightened around her hip. "Because you know I'll help you."

"Ha!" There it was, she'd won after all and so she quit fighting and tried to reclaim her more comfortable position on his lap with an arm over his shoulder. "So I figured with your help it shouldn't take too long. Of course, I'll have to make sure Nathan knows and smooth that over...I have no idea how he'll react or what. Maybe I should get him a parting gift or something."

"You don't need to get the guy a gift," Jake said instantly, not seeing why she would waste him. "It will be fine, just let me know if he gives you any hassle. Do you want me to tell him?"

He was just being helpful. Really. Okay, he really wasn't.

Caroline frowned. "Oh yes, because you telling him sounds like a great idea. What were you hoping I'd say? 'Here, I'll write a note and you can jam it in his mouth after you knock him unconscious!' Seriously Jake?" Sometimes he really worried her.

Ugh. Why did she expect him to be reasonable about this? He sighed. "Never mind."

She expected him to be decent. "Don't do that. I was just telling someone today that you were a good guy, unlike me. I'm the one who holds bitchy grudges for no good reason."

Grudges were his thing, and it was kind of surprising she didn't realise that. "I'm not that good of a guy."

"Yes you are, and I don't know why you hold a grudge there," she sighed, resting her chin on her shoulder. "I was the one who messed up that whole thing. I've tried to take the blame for it."

He sighed and rubbed circles on the small of her back, and didn't the fact that he did prove that he wasn't that good?

"I'll do better," he said quietly. And maybe it'd actually work now that she wasn't sharing a room anymore.

"I'm sorry, I'm not trying to make you feel like an ass," she sighed. "And I guess, if I imagine you and Bod had a thing...yeah, I'd probably act the same way. Only I'd probably have asked for photographic evidence that you were with him."

"Yeah, Bod's so not the right kind of blonde for me," Jake snorted, and conveniently tried to ignore anything else she said.

Right. She remembered too late that she'd slept with Bod, too. Whatever.

"So you say. But I'm just trying to say maybe I get it? And I'd probably get it better if I knew the girls you hung out with, but I don't so I can't really understand fully."

"I know what you're trying to say," he reassured her. "And I'm not asking you to stop hanging out with anyone. I trust you. That's all that matters."

"Yeah. I think I'm pretty much trustworthy," she decided. "Though you know what they say about cheaters."
