Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Quinn was a bit smug (if damp) as she filled a plate and made her way through the crowd. She felt fresh -- not beaten down by Fandom's excesses, like she had been before her time at home -- but she still knew what she was in for. It was a nice change from the year before.

She surveyed the crowd carefully, trying to figure out who was worth getting to know.

"Hey! You live!" Jake greeted Quinn cheerfully as ever despite the whole damp hair and clothes thing.

"They let me out of Ohio!" Quinn agreed, grinning back at him. "You're soaked."

She'd offer to share her umbrella, but the foot-plus difference in their heights made that a tiny bit awkward.

"It's raining," he stated the obvious. He was fine without an umbrella, though. Rain was nice and cool. He laughed. "They were holding you captive? You know, Ohio sounds about as exciting as la Push."

"If La Push is the kind of place where a sale at the mall counts as a thrilling afternoon outing, then yes, it is," Quinn said with a little laugh. "My folks split up. I went home to help my mom out. How have you been?"

Well, La Push didn't even have a mall so... Ohio just won, probably.

"Ouch, that's no fun. I'm sorry to hear that. That's no fun trip home," he replied, scratched behind his ear. "Now I feel like a jerk saying that I've been pretty damn good."

Quinn shook her head. "It's not horrible or anything," she said. "My mom's loosened up a lot, you know? I'm fine with hearing other people have been good."

"Not horrible's good," he agreed. "So are you glad to be back?"

"My Puck's here and I'm a senior," Quinn decided. "I could do a lot worse. Doesn't even sound like I missed anything huge."

"No, it's calmed down since prom, I think." It was sad how he was having trouble keeping up with the weirdness. "But then I missed some insane invasion thing myself apparently as I went camping with Caroline. Obviously, the island has been waiting for you to get back."

He was just not going to tell her about that one weekend when he'd gone insane. That didn't need repeating.

"I'll be pissed if that means I'm gonna spend another week in a locker," Quinn said, amiably enough. "So, you and Caroline are an official thing now?"

Caroline was blonde and a little scary. She approved.

"No one would blame you," he chuckled and nodded, with a grin that boys with a pretty big crush tended to have. At least, this boy did. "Yeah, been for a while now." Though he wasn't sure exactly when he should start counting.

"Aww, check you out. You look all warm and fuzzy about it," Quinn said genuinely. She had a boyfriend she adored; she could let other people have hot boys without getting jealous.

He laughed, a little embarrassed, but it was kind of pointless to try and deny it. "It's good," he admitted, grinning at her. "And I'm sure you'll get all warm and fuzzy with Puck. If you haven't already. When did you get back?"

"Just a couple hours ago," Quinn said. "I haven't found him yet. Oh -- Jake, my mom let me drive my car up from Ohio! I can escape the island if I need to."

If she could get across the causeway, anyhow.

"Cool, I'm not sure the Altanians - or whatever the fuck they're called - will be impressed, but that's cool if we ever get back. What kind of car?"

Yeah, he just had to ask. Sorry.

Toby didn't recognise her, but for a new kid, she seemed... oddly comfortable here. Which of course made him curious enough to wander over.

"Looking for someone in particular?" he guessed.

"Actually, yeah, have you seen a tallish guy with a mohawk and pierced nipples?" Quinn asked. (She figured Puck would be shirtless, rain or no rain.) She blinked at him as she tried to figure out if she'd met him or not.

She went with not. "Hi. I'm Quinn. Are you new?"

"The guy without the shirt?" Toby said. And her response pretty much confirmed that she wasn't new. "Yeah," he pointed over to where Puck was. "I'm Toby. Do I still count as new if I was here for the first half of the summer?"

"New to me?" Quinn tried. "So, new. I went home to Ohio first half of the summer. Nice to meet you."

She glanced over to Puck, smiling a bit when her eyes found him. "That would be my boyfriend."

"Oh sure, just when I'm starting to feel all smug about not being a new kid anymore," Toby said lightly. "And he's a lucky guy," he added, giving shirtless-mohawk-guy another cursory glance and then focusing back on Quinn.

"I like to think so," Quinn said, still smiling. "It's okay. I'm just in denial about people having gotten here while I was gone. I kind of hoped the island would just freeze for a while."

"Well, we were in Iceland for a bit, there," Toby joked, even though he knew full well she hadn't meant literally.

"Is that where we were with the vikings?' Quinn asked. "We got there like two days before I left. I didn't exactly have time to explore."

"You didn't miss much," Toby said with a shrug. "It was cold and they liked to shout a lot."
