Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

Peter's bodyguards scoped out his seat before he was even allowed to sit down in it. It almost made him miss last time he was here, when he'd just snuck in under the radar and he didn't have to deal with all of this fuss.

On the other hand, it was nice not having to deal with the threat of assassination attempts at the moment.

Oh, and watching his brother graduate from the program he'd pushed him into years ago. There was that.

Petra and Suriyawong sank down... next to Peter and Peter's bodyguards.

Petra in particular felt eager to see Ender again, though somehow the prospect made her feel... almost fidgety. She sat perfectly still regardless, her eyes trained on the stage.

She was not talking to Peter.

After a while, Valentine sort of got used to the idea that her little brother would be doing something as novel and normal as graduating high school, but it was still a little strange. In a really good way, though, so she was glad she was able to make it on Saturday morning to witness it.

She, however, had no intentions of going anywhere near the circus that was her older brother and his bodyguards. This was a day for Ender. She wanted to enjoy it for him, without that nuisance sexual tension distraction.

Natalie was here, naturally. Wasn't every day you got to watch your boyfriend graduate, and she'd even worn a nice dress for this occasion, mostly because she knew he'd like that.

And having nothing to do with her knowledge that his friends, Brid included, were supposed to be showing up for this too.

Her eyes searched the crowd for them, while she tried her best not to be distracted by who appeared to be Peter, sitting not too far away. Older Peter. And bodyguards. Blame it on having spent a good portion of the week reading up on Locke, but her gaze kept flicking over a lot.

Jeremy took a seat, looking at ease and holding a bouquet of mostly purple, black and blue roses for George.

There might have also been a jewelry box in the pocket of his suit, but that was for later.

Oh, Kate wouldn't have missed this for the world. For one thing, it was a Fandom graduation ceremony. For another, it was Bod's graduation ceremony. Of course she was here, looking excitedly around for familiar faces.

Also there might have been a knife in her bag. Just in case.

Richard was grinning broadly as he took his seat and tried to decipher the programme. Unfortunately, unlike the Book of Counted Shadows, it didn't seem like it was going to magically become readable any time soon.

"Do you have any idea what's happening?" he asked Kahlan as she sat beside him.

Juliet took a seat near her brother, sunglasses on despite the fact it was night. She was pretty sure she'd cry at some point.

So Donny Maclay wasn't exactly close to his sister. In fact, he kinda thought she was a freak.

But he couldn't let Tara graduate all alone; that might look bad. So here he was, fresh from his plane and on his guard, hoping nothing too bizarre happened during the ceremony.

Judy Fabray smiled as she took her seat, glancing around for anyone who looked like they might know Quinn.

As for her almost-ex-husband ... well, the fact Russell had decided he needed to be late to every significant event ever hardly meant Judy was going to be so rude. She only had two daughters, after all.

Graduation was one of those days that Caroline expected people to remember forever and she really couldn't help feeling a touch of guilt about the lack of super tall native boys in the audience. Not that she'd had a say in that, but it still bothered her.

To make up for it, she had her fully charged phone out and ready to snap a thousand pictures and maybe even take some video of the speeches, all the better to relive the event later.

Warren Worthington Jr. was still not entirely convinced that he had any right to be here, but his only son was graduating, something that he'd never thought possible while he was still a mutant, and he'd be damned if he missed it.

His son was apparently turning twenty today, too, when only a handful of months ago he'd been seventeen and running away from home. He was still trying to digest that part as he took a seat.

Zayne had been to a few Fandom graduations now, but as he took a seat, he realized this was his first as a teacher. It was a little weird to know that some of the people getting their diplomas today had (hopefully) learned something from him.

As a teacher. Not as an object lesson in what not to do.

Okay, his class was still kind of that anyway. But at least he was the one giving those lessons.

Raven, Tara, Ben, Elphaba, Squall, George... It felt like damn near everybody Jonothon knew from his school days was graduating today. It was a sort of surreal experience, considering the time difference that his own world had thrown at him. Waiting five years for his classmates to graduate one year later was unsettling.

He was sitting near the back of the crowd with the bottom of his face covered, ready to leave at the drop of a pin should any of the inevitable X-crowd take any sort of interest in him. Because Jono would always be paranoid. Forever.

Scott wasn't going to be sticking around town for too long after the ceremony, but he owed it to the kids who had to deal with him as he started to get his life together to show up as support.

Also, this was a weird place and you never knew when a guy packing energy bazookas behind his shades might be useful.

Scott took a seat very far away from the other Scott so as to not cause a scene, but close enough to support Bobby through moderate clapping and not-too-loud cheering. He figured that would be enough to distinguish him from the local guy.

He also had a visor stashed in his pocket, because this was a weird place and you never knew when you might need a guy who could fire concussive punches from his eyes.

Dave took a seat in the audience in part so that he could get down information on the ceremony for a summer edition of the Fandom High Times he was considering doing. But mostly he was here to support Miley.

At the same time, he was also trying to duck her family if they were in town for fear that they would make him eat animal eyeballs. He had no confidence that they didn't just carry eyes around in a bag as a snack.

So yes, this evening, Dave was a multitasker.

Hanna wasn't graduating today, but many of her friends were. She was there to cheer for them and to take lots of pictures with her phone.

This was Jaina's fifth graduation she was attending now. She made very sure to have her lightsaber ready just in case, but mainly she was doing her best to focus on being happy for Ben today.

And kind of hoping the graduating class turned into animals or had to sing or something. Shh, she was never going to stop being bitter about hers.

Having witnessed the previous two years worth of graduations, Bruce wasn't taking any chances. He had some light body armor on under the suit he was wearing under his robe, plus his utility belt. It wasn't fully loaded so that it wouldn't seem bulky under the robe, but he had more than enough weapons on him that he wouldn't need to approach the podium if weapons were needed.

And it didn't hurt that he would be next to somebody who knew her way around a battle for the whole ceremony. He really couldn't be more prepared, really.
