Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

Francine was always up for a chance to worry about somebody else's problems. "Is everything okay there? I'm sorry we couldn't make it to your party; I had houseguests finals."

Kate waved a hand. "No worries, it was pretty short notice, anyway," she said. "And, uh, my parents are gonna be in Boston for a few months for this in-patient thing for my mom? Things were pretty funky for a while but they're getting better."

Francine knew... not a lot, about Kate's mom, but maybe enough to get the gist that they weren't talking chemo here. "Are you all alone out there, now? I wouldn't want to stay by myself."

"Well, yeah," Kate shrugged. "I mean, me and Moosh and Bod. My aunt and... uncle, I guess, live next door but even they're househunting right now. And when they're done with that they'll move to Houston. It's just us three."

"You're not alone-alone, then; that's good. Is Bod coming out there to live with you all the time now?"

"For a while, anyway," she nodded. "Our plans are still kinda wide open, but that's what's gonna happen right now, yeah."

"It's so weird that he's graduating now too. And Warren, and Firekeeper, and Raven..." Francine shook her head. "Makes me feel old." Not really; it just made her feel a little more separated from Fandom, and she wasn't sure she liked that. "Pretty soon the only person left here I know will be Karla. Well, and the teachers."
