Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

Francine wasn't staring at the strange-looking people except in a happy ohgodI'vemissedthis haze. Not that she hadn't run into strange people in St. Louis, but strange in Missouri was not strange in Fandom, and she much preferred this kind.

Like wings! There was Warren on the stage! And wolves!

Also already graduated former little siblings! Like this one, bouncing over to her right now.

"Franciiiine! Hi!"

"KAAAATE!" Hope you weren't trying to avoid getting hugged Kate, because boy, did you bounce over to the wrong girl, if so.

Oh, Kate would simply have been offended if no hugging had happened. "Hiii! How are you?"

"Good. Better being back here, though. I never thought I'd say this, but wow the normal-people world can be boring."

Why did she say things like that? Was it like some mutant power to call down the wrath of Cartoonist-produced Lesbian Mafia irony on her head?

"Occasionally," Kate agreed, though her normal-people world... had managed a lot of not-normal things even lately. "I don't know, I find I manage, but things can be pretty fucked back home sometimes too, so."

Francine was always up for a chance to worry about somebody else's problems. "Is everything okay there? I'm sorry we couldn't make it to your party; I had ~~houseguests~~ finals."

"Francine!" Karla said, happy to see an old friend. "Good to see you! I've missed you!"

And now someone was preemptively trying to hug you!

"You too! We need to come back more often when the universe isn't ending." Oh, Fandom. "How've you been?"

"Well, the world hasn't ended for awhile, so that's nice," Karla said, skipping adroitly past the subject of how much she loathed graduation. "And it's my birthday today. I'm eighteen, which I guess is a big deal for this world?"

See? That was...something!

"Eeee, congratulations! Now you can..." Francine paused. "Drink at Caritas which you could already do, join the army and vote?" Well, she could if she were actually a citizen, Francie.

"Vote?" Karla asked, confused. "For what? StuCo again?"

Karla: So not up on modern politics. And also that whole not-a-citizen thing, yeah.

"For the President. It's an election year in the States. Which..." This would be Francine realizing the citizen thing. "Won't remotely matter to somebody from another dimension. Not that you're gonna be joining the army, either."

And that siren signaled the glomp of a red-headed fellow alum and sugar fiend. "IT'S BEEN FOREVER!"

Okay, since the group trip to Glacia, but whatever. Momoko didn't see nearly enough of her only sugar-friend who could actually BAKE!

Speaking of which...

"Momoko! I made green tea cupcakes!"

This was not random. With Francine, would this ever be random? Her finals were over before Katchoo's, she'd been bored, and... she had a really big purse.

And a tupperware container she'd be pulling out just as soon as she de-glomped.

"EEEEEEEEK!" That required and extra bounce to the glomp and then a quick finding of a temporary seat next to Francine and waiting patiently (ha!) for a sample. "That's because you are totally awesome! How's school? Is college fun? You're in... Missery, right?"

Francine giggled. "Missouri. It's only misery during finals week or when the temperature gets above 95."

Said the girl who grew up in Houston, but that was a dry heta.

"Miz ooo reee," Momoko grinned and gave a thumbs up. "I'm totally still working on all the names! It gives me something to do while waiting for people to show at my work!" Plus she was kind of addicted to checking maps, after the Nothing. "Did you know there's no New Gotham in my world? I checked! We do have a Texas, though. And a Baltimore."

Momoko made hungry eyes at the container of cupcakes. "What are you studying anyway?"

Katchoo . . . found out it was harder to pick out the familiar faces among all the new ones, but took the unfamiliar faces in stride, really, although there might've been a long, cynical internal monologue about the inevitability of change, yadda yadda blah.

There was, actually, but no need to burden the narrative with that, right?

Shut up. She'd missed these people.

Just like Francine wasn't burdening the narrative with a long, much less cynical, much more anxious monologue about oh God, how could they be Juniors in college now and why did things have to change and would whatever inevitably happened halfway through graduation end up smooshing the cupcakes she had stuffed into her purse or would they escape unscathed.

Lucky ~~Katchoo~~ narrative.

"Franciiiiiiiine!" GLOMP. Dinah was doing that a lot today.

"Dinahdinahdinahdinah!" What? It'd been foreeeever. At least in 20-year-old-girl years.

"Oh God, Dinah, I missed your birthday. I'm so sorry -- and after your kids called me on mine, too!"

Oh, Fandom.

Dinah was giggling and hugging her back, and pulled back a little to beam. "Didn't they sound awesome? God. And awww, s'okay-- I was working on my birthday anyway. We should go drinking! And get ice cream!"

"At the same time?" That actually sounded kind of awesome, granted.

"Yes! And I can tell you all about Lena, and show you pix! ... also pix of what happened after all the kids left and Karla and Momoko and I went out drinking to deal with it." Dinah snickered. "God. I can't believe it's been two years since it was us up there, fighting monsters."
